The Toronto Symphony Orchestra announced its 2003-2004 season today.

Among the goodies, one can find two movie music related concerts.

    quote:

    The Magic of Mancini
    October 7
    October 8 - 2:00 pm
    October 8
    Errol Gay, conductor
    Monica Mancini, vocalist
Music by Henry Mancini including: Pink Panther, Peter Gunn, Baby Elephant Walk, Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River

    quote:

    MGM: Those Glorious Hollywood Musicals!
    April 13
    April 14 - 2:00 pm
    April 14
    Jack Everly, conductor
    Anne Runolfsson, vocalist
    Heide Holcomb, vocalist
    Mark Martino, vocalist/dancer
    Morgan Smith, vocalist
    Scott Tucker, vocalist
    Mississauga Choral Society

I would assume the Mancini concert to be in 2003, and the MGM concert in 2004.

Interesting that there is no LORD OF THE RINGS announcement.

Perhaps the TSO is just too good for modern film music of perhaps Howard Shore is just too good for the city which he was born in?

    Oh come on.

Before being pissy, I would first like to know how much it would cost to organize such a concert, paying Shore's ego, getting a big chorus, probably renting the images...

Given that the TSO barely made it through bankruptcy, I can understand how they would be afraid of putting on a concert which should, but may not, attract audiences. So they stick with a proven "Mozart" formula for a while longer.

The 2003-2004 season has eliminated almost all modern music crapworks in favour of listenable stuff. Film music remains an uncertainty for drawing audiences, and I don't think that their decision has anything to do with being snotty about modern film music.

BTW, something I missed the first time, the TSO will also play Bruce Broughton's The Magic Horn. http://www.tso.ca/2002_2003/ticket/ticket20.cfm

    quote:
    The Magic Horn March 6
    Errol Gay, conductor
    Magic Circle Mime Company
    Programme includes:
    Broughton: The Magic Horn
Grieg: "Morning Mood" from Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1
Saint-Saëns: "Baccanale" from Samson et Delilah

Something featuring a mime group http://www.partiturmusic.com/brucemus.htm

There's also to be a performance of Walton's Henry V suite, with narrator (Plummer).

    quote:

    Michael Lankester, conductor
    Christopher Plummer, narrator
    Toronto Children’s Chorus
    The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir

HANDEL The King Shall Rejoice, Water Music, Suite No. 2, Zadok the Priest

    WALTON Henry V
