Anyone take a gander at the Gods and Generals sample tracks? If you *weren't* impressed after seeing and hearing Gettysburg, then get ready for the score in this pending movie prequel!Personally, I have to say that Edelman's original score was some of the most contrived, uninspiring, insipid, smothering, confusing, and godawful SOUND that I've ever heard in a movie/film. Not only did my ears bleed, but my brain hemorraged... ANYWAY, apart from all of that, I recently discovered that John Frizzell collaborated with Edelman for this flick! Something I learned this from the official site.
And for any Civil War music nut, Mark O'Connor will be lending some virtuoso violin solos to the score!!! [I can almost swear it at this point that the end result won't be anything like the Last of the Mohicans album, so... props, lots of freaking props.]Check out the samples at the official site: www.godsandgenerals.com

I hope it's not all that bad, I have already pre-ordered a copy from Columbia House...
Really, I am a fan of both composers, though, why a period film gets such film music is beyond me. Hopefully, this time around it will be more balanced. That said, I couldn't care less as to how either are in the film at this point. As long as it's good on CD that is all I am asking for.

GODS AND GENERALS is a rather enjoyable album, and the score is a pleasure to listen to. It's not really like GETTYSBURG, and most of the tracks are credited to Frizzell. It even comed with a bonus DVD that contains the two music videos (I really like the Bob Dylan one), the film trailer, and exclusive scenes from the movie (they kinda indicated that these aren't in the final film) where songs are being sung on screen. Pretty good deal all around!Dan

What now made it sound so bad to you? I found Edelman's score very epic, and expressive. One of my favorite scores-
But maybe I just have odd tastes. I also consider Dennis McCarthy's Star Trek: Generations to be wonderful- one of the finest scores I've heard. Apparently it isn't so popular with most everyone else.posted 02-02-2003 01:09 PM PT (US)

I love both scores. Gettysburg, like Jared Cowing, is one of my favorites. The only thing that brought down Gettysburg was the lack of an orchestra. As for Gods and Generals, although the Gettysburg cues are missing, it is an awesome score. It has some beautiful cues, and some very solemn ones. Overall, both scores are definaitely favorites of mine. I can only hope that the G&G score will match perfectly with the images of the film.Kyle-who thinks two days is too long to wait

After the "preview thing" ends (you can press skip to bypass it), you click on soundtrack and the clips may be heard from there. Well, there ya go...enjoy!!!

What if you attempt to persuade me otherwise (that the score is so great) and I'll reciprocate by divulging my reasons for finding it so godawful, eh?

Oh yeah, if no one has figured this out already, you can hear the entire album for Gods and Generals at Sony Classical VIPThe album is hitting the shelves tomorrow, so I'll be getting my copy in due time. I usually loathe purchasing film scores prior to seeing the movie, but I have to admit that this is a great standalone album. It's an uttely poignant portrayal of the war... I'm about halfway through and looky here, I'm recommending it already!
Can it move you to tears? Possibly... I can't tell you much John Frizzell's touch enhances everything because you seriously have to hear it for yourself.[Message edited by VampirXNT on 02-03-2003]

I think this sets an all-time record. There are 9 orchestrators listed in the credits for GODS AND GENERALS.
Nine.

Rumor has it that the DVD version of the movie will be 6 hours long.Six

BTW, I think Edelman's theme for Gettysburg was excellent. Again, too bad a full orchestra was not used throughout... coulda been one for the ages. I did like his use of the guitar, as I did for "Mohicans"; it's the synth which 'dilutes' the score. Looking forward to hearing "Gods and Generals".

I just listened to it for the third time...great stuff. So far my favorite tracks are...ALL of them. The deleted scenes on the DVD are good, but not great. Without seeing the movie, these scenes have less meaning (they're mearly teasing me). So what da yall think bout it?Kyle

This is only a small fraction of the deleted material; as Scorro stated above, the actual DVD will be 6 hours long!

Oh, that's cool. I'm actually getting my copy of the album later tomorrow. Well, I prefer not to look at deleted scenes until after I've seen the film, but all in good time I suppose.
I'll give some feedback shortly.

I'm loving this score. Very very powerful music. Are Frizzell's other score anywhere near this good?My only (minor) gripe is that track 10 'To The Stone Wall' reminds me so much of Kamen's 'What Dreams May Come' it's distracting. The theme starts exaclty the same and then toakes off in a different direction... The half-hour it took me to figure out what score it's reminding me of was pure hell

The CD is great! A highlight of 2003. Frizzell makes for himself a great come back with "Gods and Generals."--Brian

Perhaps what he is is an incredible collaborator more than a standalone; it just seems that he knows how to change things for the better...
As a side note, the deleted scenes for G&G were deleted for a good reason. haha One other thing, if you haven't already seen this film, go see it now. Some of the most poignant moments become monumental tear-jerkers thanks to this incredible score.

I believe you are wrong, my dear friend.
As far as I know, Michael Kamen still holds the all-time record with Robin Hood:
1) Jack Hayes
2) William Ross
3) Don Davis
4) Bruce Babcock
5) Albert Olson
6) Patrick Russ
7) Brad Warnaar
8) Lolita Ritmanis
9) Mark Watters
10) Elliot Kaplin
11) Jonathan Sacks
12) Richard Davis
13) Harvey Cohen
14) Beth Lee
15) Chris Boardman
and Michael Kamen is also listed among the orchestrators.posted 02-24-2003 04:15 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
