This is a fantasic album for beginners who have never heard Korngold's music and for the biggest soundtrack fans in the world. The recording is excellent!!!

That's great to see Korngold winning awards. I'm not familiar with this particular album, but I own a half dozen other re-recordings of his work that are fantastic.

    Well...

I'd rather had seen they would have gone for the Frankel or the Bliss. Much better CDs actually. (But I had expected that the Korngold/Previn wins.)

The Barshai Shostakovich is indeed a revalation.

    I didn't like the Frankel.
His music just sounded outdated, the sound was transparent, but thin, and the Queensland Symphony on this particular recording sounded somewhat uninterested and understaffed.

    But I loved the Bliss.
For the opposite reasons: full and mighty sound, excited and exciting reading of Bliss' music, with the BBC Philharmonic in best of forms.

As for the Korngold, I went nuts for it when I first got it, and while I still like it, I'm not as excited now as I was then. It's... well... too slow.
