DARKNESS FALLS (Brain Tyler) - March 4
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Bernard Herrmann, cond. Joel McNeely; recorded in London rather than Glasgow) - March 4
QUIET AMERICAN (Craig Armstrong) - March 4

So Varese is trying their hand a capitalizing on another DVD issue (Day The Earth Stood Still). Didn't they try this with Legend?

My question is (and I guess I could email them directly, but this is soo much more fun): why do we need another "re-imagining" of this score, when there was the excellent version that came out just 10 years ago?

Just because the new one is "24-bit remastering" doesn't mean it's better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more Herrmann releases. But let's do something that hasn't been done already. Sheesh Varese.

    24-bit @ EMI Abbey Road?

Bring it on whatever it is. Don't care if it been done 100 times.

Wow this is the best soundtrack news of 2003 so far. I am especially excited to hear Brian Tyler's two scores!

Answer: To capitilize on the DVD coming out the same time.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is one of my favorite scores of all-time (I love the film too, hence where the name "Klaatu Media" came from).

The CD release from FOX is fantastic, but the sound is less-then-desirable. I look forward to McNeely's interpretation. His work with Varese on Herrmann's music has been stellar thus far.

I'm also glad that Brian Tyler is nabbing two commercial releases. His score for FRAILTY is one of the year's best, his score for TERROR TRACT was sadly relegated to a little-seen cable film. This guy is a major talent.

    Website coming soon!!

I can't say that I've always been thrilled by McNeely doing Herrmann. And there are still a few unrecorded works that I'd like to see Varese do. Still, I have to agree that we needed someone to try and do a DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. This is one of the strangest sounding most avant-garde scores there ever was. Nic Raine did a suite from this for Silva which actually wasn't too bad and didn't even have Theremins only synths. So it is possible that McNeely could shine with this (though I'm not going to get my hopes up). On the other hand, it also sounds like a difficult score to perform in its entirety, so we'll just have to see what the results are. I'll be blowing my money on this. I just hope it doesn't sit on the shelf never to be played again like my copies of Marnie, Citizen Kane, and The Twilight Zone do now.
