I was very sad to read tonight about the passing of actor Richard Crenna. He died on Friday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76. He will always live in my mind as Colonel Sam Trautman from the Rambo films, whose dialogue I quoted without mercy to my friends and he will always be the captain of the San Pablo.

That's sad to hear of his passing. I will always remember his unabashed spoof of himself in HOT SHOTS: PART DEUX.

At least he won't have to deal with Rambo IV.....

I know you didn't mean any offense by that remark Dan, but that was kinda below the belt

In preparation for the series of Melville films I'm showing, I re-watched a good deal of Un Flic the Melville film he stars in with Alain Delon. At first, he seemed an odd choice for this French noir but Melville loved actors who could underplay and must've seen something in Crenna that fit the part of an easy-going guy who uses his friendship with a policeman to his own ends. I don't know if I could describe a Crenna persona since he had a range that was hard to pin down. The Sand Pebbles was mentioned. I remember a very short-lived 70s sitcom, All's Fair, he did with Bernadette Peters set in Washington DC that captivated me from episode one. He could play romantic and even wacky (John Goldfarb, Won't You Please Come Home), but I suppose I remember him best as the nasty heavy in Wait Until Dark and as the seedy "mentor" who tries to lead Matt Dillon astray in the surprisingly good The Flamingo Kid. Good scores or not, I haven't seen the Rambo films. And is the case with so many names you find in the obits, since I hadn't seen the guy in anything for so long, I presummed he was already gone.

Terribly sad news, he will be missed....Crenna had a great style and distinctive face, and I was always happy to see him on screen.

I have a copy of an article from a 1976 newspaper quoting producer Kevin McClory as having Richard Crenna signed as James Bond in his previously titled "James Bond of the Secret Service." This was the name of his script for the "Thunderball" remake (a later title was "Warhead") and finally remade into "Never Say Never Again."

This was as unusual as hearing that John Gavin was signed to play 007 in "Diamonds Are Forever."

Can anyone comment on this Crenna 007 report?
