I was thinking about what my top 10 new film scores for 2002 would be and came up with this list.

(*I reserve the right to update this list once I hear things I have missed. I.E. Ararat, The Guys, etc.)

    1. Far From Heaven-Elmer Bernstein
    2. The Hours-Philip Glass
    3. Possession-Gabriel Yared
    4. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers-Howard Shore
    5. Spirited Away-Joe Hisaishi
    6. Road to Perdition-Thomas Newman
    7. Minority Report-John Williams
    8. Signs-James Newton Howard
    9. The Count of Monte Cristo-Edward Shearmur
    10. Talk to Her-Alberto Iglesis

    Honorable mention:
    Die Another Day-David Arnold
    Frida-Elliot Goldenthal
    Punch-Drunk Love-Jon Brion
    Enigma-John Barry

Several of these scores got stuck in my CD player for weeks & weeks. The Hours, Possession, Minority Report, Die Another Day, Enigma, The Two Tower, Count of Monte Cristo.

    Best original songs for 2002:
"Gollum's Song" from The Two Towers
    "Possesso (Aria" from Possession
"If We Can Remember(The Mission" from Sum of All Fears
    "I Move On" from Chicago

Since I don't think I've listened to enough to make a sensible Top 10, here is my list of the Top 5 scores of 2002:

    1. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (Howard Shore) (thought it was so-so at first listen, but after seeing the film and hearing it in the context of the first score, I love it).

    2. SAINT SINNER (Christopher Lennertz) Like Justin Caine Burnett, I believe this man has the potential to go places.

    3. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (John Williams/William Ross). A beautiful new theme, and the work most reminiscent of William's greatest period of commercial success (1977 - 1983).

    4. SIGNS (James Newton Howard)
Howard can compose heroic bombast (TREASURE PLANET, ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE) and subtle psychological terror (SIGNS, THE SIXTH SENSE) without skipping a beat.

    5. LONG WALK HOME - MUSIC FROM THE RABBIT-PROOF FENCE (Peter Gabriel). Not only does this score reflect the beauty and the terror of the Australian landscape, it is literally MADE of the Australian landscape. Natural rhythms, bird calls, water over rocks. The brilliance of Gabriel is to combine these sounds into a tonal, harmonic theme.

Mmm...no, I think he refers to Klaus Badeltīs The Time Machine...the best score of 2002...which comes from a young composer with a great future in the movie music wolrd. Tiiiiiime, is on his side, yes it is

NP Take off (aka War)(Pearl Harbor complete score)

    Top 10:

    1) The Two Towers
    2) K-19
    3) Signs
    4) Road to Perdition
    5) Count of Monte Cristo
    6) Attack of the Clones
    7) Star Trek: Nemesis
    8) Reign of Fire
    9) We Were Soldiers
    10) The Time Machine

I think Howard Shore and James Newton Howard have supplanted themselves as my favorite composers today, with Shearmur and Badelt being tomorrow's favorites.

I caught "Snow Dogs" on TV a while back. Sort of like a modern-day Don Knotts movie, though Cuba Gooding, Jr. seemed (to me) way miscast. Liked Debney's score.

It's nice to see that someone else saw "Half Past Dead". An underrated action flick with a fine score by Tyler Bates.

    My choices:

40 Days and 40 Nights - Rolfe Kent (would that the score had a better film in which to showcase it)
    Ice Age - David Newman
    Spider-Man - Danny Elfman
    Undercover Brother - Stanley Clarke
    Scooby-Doo - David Newman
Lilo and Stitch - Alan Silvestri
The Powerpuff Girls Movie - James L. Venable
Austin Powers in Goldmember - George S. Clinton
Treasure Planet - James Newton Howard
Catch Me if You Can - John Williams

When I read your WHOLE list, Ryan, I knew you were joking, but I have to say that I think Debney's Snow Dogs has a GREAT main action theme, a nice love theme and some fine comedic scoring. I've played it a lot this year.

I probably pick on John Debney too much. He's obviously talented, and a kind man, but he needs to start scoring some real films, not SNOW DOGS and THE HOT CHICK.

No matter how good these scores might be, they are scores for lame films and not destined to be considered classics.

You're right, Ryan. Snow Dogs is a pretty lame film, but IMHO it has a strong score. (I still like a lot of Goldsmith scores for some rotten movies.)

Happy belated New Year to all of you.
My list is in no particular order:

Road To Perdition-I hope the academy doesn't overlook this, as the foreign press did
    Signs-ditto
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Star Wars Episode II-I know...I know, but the presentation on CD was to my liking
The Time Machine-This was boosted up on this list because it comes from a rather new composer
Minority Report-great score, but will likely be snubbed at the Oscars
    Spirited Away
LORT:The Two Towers-Possibly better than the original
Catch Me If You Can-Only in the film, not on disc

I have yet to listen to Count of Monte Cristo, Far From Heaven, and The Hours so they may be added later

On a side note, the songs that I enjoyed were:
    "Gollum's Song"
    "If We Could Remember"

Joke or not, I stand by every last syllable in my previous post. I look forward to the Cinemusic Awards.

Also, I wonder if Justin liked "Signs"?

I just saw "The Quiet American" yesterday and you can add "Song for Phuong" to my list of Best songs for a film from last year.

I know Varese cancelled the release of this score, but the end credits state that the CD was to be released by Sony Classical. Any word on what the deal is with this release?

What the HELL was I thinking????

I totally forgot my FAVORITE song from a film last year: "Burn it Blue" from Frida by Elliot Goldenthal & Julie Taymor!

Take "I Move On" from Chicago off the list and put "Burn It Blue" at the TOP!
