Suddenly Hans Zimmer has become tied with Danny Elfman as being my favorite composer. I recently went through the long list of Zimmer's work at the IDMB site. These are the scores that are still out there that i don't own and am interested in picking up. This will make my Zimmer collection complete. Please give me your opinions on all or some of the scores I will mwntion. Thanks alot and Happy New Year!!! Matt

For a fine suspense score with light moments thrown it, get "Pacific Heights".

"Radio Flyer" is a lighter effort with an edge. I also recommend it.

"The Lion King" is good, though the selection is limited (at 4 tracks spread out over 16 minutes; my favorite cue is "To Die For"); luckily, the Elton John-Tim Rice songs that take up the rest of the album are enjoyable, so it doesn't feel like wasted space.

I would hazard the opportunity to unintentionally sound a little antagonistic here, and say "trust your own judgement", rather than rely on other people to tell you what they think you should buy. You've listed just about everything Zimmer's done--you've got to start somewhere. Trust yourself.

I think you could buy almost anything by Hans Zimmer and be pleased with it. He is possibly the most prolific and well known film music composer on the planet! Why is that? It's because his music has such a unique and fantastic sound.

Thank you Hans for Your massive contributions to the film score community! Your scores are loved by many, including myself. Please keep up the good work.

Out of those you listed, I think Lion King and Thin Red Line are the greatest of them. Like I said, you really can't go wrong with Zimmer.

Judging by the collection of Zimmer scores that you have, they're mostly action scores, with Black Hawk Down and Hannibal being the most unique of them. Anyway, I'll try to give you a very very skimpy score-by-score description:

Drop Zone - an off-the-wall action score that is very similar to K2, if you haven't heard that before. "Too Many Notes, Not Enough Rest" is worth the price alone. If you liked track 8 of "The Rock," then you'll like this one.

Beyond Rangoon - one of his "unofficial" foray into Asian sounds, and for some reason reminds me a lot of Broken Arrow, in terms of instrumentation, not themes.

An Everlasting Piece - the most interesting of the list, as the "Jigs" are mostly MV members, and it's really an upbeat and rocking score. Not rocking in the sense of the action scores, but a lighter approach with some Irish-sounding instruments thrown into the mix. The MV guys had fun with this one.

The Pledge - one of the best ambient scores, with two strong guitar themes, it's really a score meant for listening at late-hours

Invincible - a very classical score, conveys a lot of sadness.

Thin Red Line - the thinking man's war score, with Journey to the Line presenting the most prominent theme (though seldomly played)

Spirit Stallion - a lot like Backdraft, if you like that.

Smillia's Sense of Snow - it sounds more like a suspense thriller than anything else, with Harry Gregson Williams probably doing most of the honors.

Green Card/Driving Miss Daisy/I'll Do Anything/Renaissance Man/Nine Months/Radio Flyer - all very alike, in the sense that Hans' comedy scores are very light, and bits and pieces of "romantic" cues are thrown in. Nine Months is the most "score"ful of the lot, with a more serious feel, and very sweeping because it will occasionally bring tears to your eyes.

Pacifice Heights - the most suspensful of the list, with a lot of eerie sounds and creepy ambience

Power Of One - tribal choir mixed into Zimmer melodies.

Paper House - the most unimpressive of the lot, as it was one of his earliest scores, still under the tutelage of the late Stanley Myers. But if you find out you like Pacific Heights, you might like this one.

A World Apart - if you heard Rain Man, then you've heard the Zimmer contributions of A World Apart, which also has other African/tribal pieces quite like The Power of One, but with more vocals.

    I noticed you left out:

Something to Talk About - awesome piece that carries the same lightheartedness like An Everlasting Piece and it's probably his most "western" score.

Black Rain - there's a complete bootleg that is often considered his most innovative work. A lot of ambience, but done just right to enhance the feeling of Nick's (Michael Douglas' character) isolation in a foreign land.

Days of Thunder - think of his 80s scores, and think fast-paced action, though it's not as militant or ferocious as his early/mid-90s action scores. There's a bootleg that comes with Radio Flyer.

Rain Man - like some said before, it's the holy grail to his synthesizer scores. It's a must get if you can find the bootleg.

Thelma and Louise - very much like Something to Talk About (see above), and there's a bootleg with Regarding Henry, which is haunting and soul-piercing. T & L Does consist of some brief action cues.

Toys - perfect for the Holidays.

Whole Wide World - can't say too much about this one as I don't own this one yet

Millenium - an excellent PBS documentary soundtrack in the vein of his tribal outings like Power Of One and A World Apart

Point of No Return - the first first tracks are a lot like the action cues that Drop Zone has, but with a relatively happier twist. The rest of the soundtrack has Nina Simone singing, which kind of throws you off when comparing with the Zimmer parts. I guess it would make more sense if you saw the movie.

The House of the Spirits - if you liked the somber parts of Pearl Harbor, this is a great accompaniment.

I ignored most of his animation efforts, except Spirit. Don't know why.

Try to find the two elusive Follow Your Dreams albums, as they are largely a sample to his (and Mark Mancina's) vast array of sounds, many of which are very experimental. There are many others which I probably missed, but the above should suffice for now.
