One of Bernard Herrmann's most passionate and lyrical scores is coming soon to DVD: THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR.From DVDFile.com
In more supernatural romantic fun, Fox will also release the next in its new remastered classics line, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and newly remastered, extras have not yet been announced.

And don't forget the earlier announcement:From DVDFile.com:
----
Attention sci-fi fans! Fox Home Entertainment has three much beloved classics on tap for a March 4th release. First up is the Robert Wise classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. Featuring a newly remastered transfer in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio and English, French and Spanish mono tracks, this double-sided disc includes many extras. Side one features an audio commentary by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer, a "MovieTone News" clip of the premiere, and the theatrical trailer; Side two includes "The Making The Earth Stand Still" documentary, a restoration comparison, 6 still galleries and trailers for other Fox sci-fi flicks. Retail is only $19.95.
....Rounding this out is Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is relatively bare bones. Features include a new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and 4.0 Stereo track, a restoration comparison, and trailers. Retail is but $14.95 each.----
Also, not yet announced, but Fox is also apparently planning a DVD release for the Herrmann-scored Cinemascope western Garden of Evil.

LBX Garden of Evil huh? That sounds pretty good. I've only seen it flat and you can tell that this is a film that used its aspect ratio to some effect. And what an interesting premise. SPOILER: 5 guys all want the same girl and are all willing to die for her and, guess what, 4 of them do, and only one of them gets her. Nature is cruel.

Aaah!A real movie.
I will love seeing this remastered. My old Fox Video laserdisc of this has more artifacts than movie.
I can't wait to see what the "Farewell" sequence will look like in the new transfer. That's always been one of my favorite pieces of cinematography... and Herrmann's score there is just georgeous. Harrison wasn't so bad, either.
This is one of those films that makes you wistful when you think about it.

For those who are interested in the 'Muir' DVD, it will contain a commentary track with the following participants: Gregg Kimble, Jeannie Bassinger, Kenneth Geist, and Chris Husted. I'm not sure what else in on there. In Herrmann-related DVD news, Universal will be re-issuing their out of print letterboxed but bare bones DVD treatment of Francois Truffaut's "Fahrenheit 451" the same day as Fox will be releasing "Muir." I would call it a good film, though it suffers immensely if you've read the book, and even more if you love the book (count me for both). It does have nice cinematography and a marvelous Herrmann score. At $10, it's certainly a steal. This is excellent that four Herrmann-scored films are making it to DVD. A good time indeed for his fans to rejoice.

A re-issue of Fahrenheit 451 is fine, but the real question is, did they remaster it at all? Is the new edition anamorphic?

I'd just like to point out what a fantastic re-recording Elmer Bernstein did of MUIR. Very few film scores have been so successfully redone. The sound is warm and full and the interpretation is first-rate. The London players rose to the challenge magnificently.Varese also has most of the original tracks out on disc, but I prefer Bernstein's interpretation.

Ed, I have to agree with you. While I love having the original tracks and listen to that CD from time to time, most of the time when I listen to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir it is the Bernstein recording.

From DVDFile.com:"Fahrenheit 451 DVD. Presented in 1.85:1 and English mono, extras include an audio commentary by Julie Christie, the featurettes "The Novel: A Discussion with Author Ray Bradbury," "The Making of Fahrenheit 451" and "The Music of Fahrenheit 451," the original title sequence, a poster gallery, and the trailer. Retail is a mere $14.95 each."
Wow, that is incredible. A featurette all about the music, a documentary on the film's making, a commentary....lots of extras...I must confess I was expecting this to be bare bones. Marvelous to hear about the Herrmann featurette.

But is the 1.85 transfer anamorphic or flat?

Check this out:
http://www.towerrecords.com/product.asp?pfid=2780414&cc=USDIt lists this as being an anamorphic transfer. I should add that the other day I was looking at the menu screens for this DVD on a DVD website (can't recall the exact site at the moment), and it appears that there will not be a commentary included on the DVD. We'll see though.
