OK, since Peter brought this thread back up to the top, I can't stop myself from bringing something else up :

Is anybody else worried that Varese Sarabande may stop releasing old scores as "normal" releases, like The Planet of the Apes and those Herrmann at FOX discs, and instead dump expensive Club releases on us? (Studs Lonigan, Sand Pebbles, The Virgin Queen, and etc. are fine examples.)

Then there is the fact that the Deluxe Edition seems to have unfortunately morphed into the Limited Deluxe Edition. The Deluxe Editions had fine production values, but unfortunately, based on their recent releases, Varese seems to have decided to focus on the more expensive and undistributed limited Club releases instead.

Not to mention the fact that Varese must make a killing off of those shipping rates on Club releases that they wouldn't get with a well-distributed Deluxe Edition.

Jonathan, no. I'm not a bit worried about that. For one reason: Varèse Sarabande's Club releases are flat and I could not care less than I already do about the "Club". So if they want to put out scores I don't care about for 29.99$ or more, they can do so.

Interesting speculation about the potential shift in distribution models. Maybe Varese has decided that the normal distribution model doesn't work too well with Golden Age releases?

Anyway, with regard to your point about shipping, in terms of profit margin per CD, perhaps Varese's making a "killing," but when there are only 3000 copies of any single CD, a few dollars in shipping profit margin won't make much of a difference to Varese's bottom line.

Hats off to Disque Cinemusique for their first batch of releases, and the price tag all collectors are begging for.

Thing is, Peter, that those discs are all just taken from the vinyl sources... and they're fully unauthorized..... (you know what THAT means....)

Dan, what part of "Warner Chappell France," "Largo Music," etc, indicates "unauthorized" status? And.... damned those releases only offering what's been released on LP previously, or even taken from LP sources. Your soundtrack producer pal Thaxton would never do such a thing, would he?

Who told you these were unauthorized?

Somebody should release Bergeaud's trailer music from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and (I think) The River Wild. Kicks ass!

Hey Peter, ease down on the venom - you don't come across as the loveable cherub you really are deep down inside.

I was told this by someone at a record label who shall remain unnamed (I'm sure you can appreciate the concept of not divulging one's sources), but I assure you it was not Mr. Ford Thaxton.

That's what I thought, Dan. Although I never implied your source regarding the bootleg claim was Thaxton (read close!), you and your source appear to be wrong, nameless as they may be.

Waiting to hear what C.F. has to say about this....

Well, if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, and would be happy to have it cleared up. And I never said you suggested it was Thaxton (read close, Peter!); I was just putting it out there so that there was no debate on that point.

Well, if you'd remove yourself from the thread, Pete, I'm sure it would be salvageable.

Playing the Advocate's Devil...thanks for answering in this thread the question I posed here:
    http://www.moviemusic.com/mb/Forum1/HTML/010576.html

Due to a past experience with the person who I believe is behind these releases, I had the feeling that they are indeed mastered from vinyl sources. That in itself isn't bad since the guy does a good restoration job, but it would be interesting to know if the source is indicated on the CD packaging or liner notes if there are any.

As far as authorization goes, if they ARE authorized, one must wonder why the LPs were used instead of master tapes, if that indeed is the case. I'd have a hard time believing that all of these titles have missing masters. Perhaps it's a cost saving step? It just brings back thoughts of Artemis/Movietrack Classics.
