CNN quotes Variety that Mad Max will return in FURY ROAD for Fox.

Mel will reprise his role as Max (and produce through Icon?).

Brian May and Maurice Jarre have scored his adventures. Who should we nominate for this new trip down the white-lined nightmare?

Here's the link:

Wasn`t Shearmur involved in Miller`s Babe 2?
He would make a great choice for this, somewhere along the stylistical line of Reign of Fire.

NP: Nemesis (actually, gets better with repeated listens)

Either Shearmur or Poledouris. I will settle for no other composers.

Perhaps another Australian like Christopher Gordon. He wrote some great music for Moby Dick and On The Beach.

yes, Shearmur would be a very good choise, Poledouris, too.
But what about Chris Young? His scores for DefCon 4 and U-Boat- The Wolfpack and Wheels of Fire sound (Very) similar to the original May-scores.

OK, Chris Young would also be a good choice. The score needs to be fully orchestral, with a lot of weight behind it, which is why Poledouris is so well suited. CONAN MEETS MAD MAX - can't you hear it?

Anyone buy Media Ventures. Let's have a real score.

Oh yeah, and also anyone but Horner... and Media Ventures.

Actually, this is a great idea.

Buy Media Ventures.
Fire the employees.
Replace them with more productive staff like Bramson, Smalley, Ross, McKenzie, Stone, etc.

If he can still pull it off, I'd be more than happy to see Jarre return to the scene.

I am almost positive that this is a bad idea, but if it must be done Christopher Gordon is the right choice.

Give a listen to On The Beach and you will hear him give a virtuoso performance that runs from a military style piece to an elegy and some really fine choral work.

The perfect choice. I hope that he isn't going to join the list with Bruce Broughton and John Scott as a composer whose superior skills never get a chance to be known.

I don't know who should score it but I'm interested in knowing more about it. Isn't Gibson too old to play this guy? And after the weak 3rd film that was supposed to wrap things up, where can they possibly go with the concept? Miller is directing which is a plus and they are willing to give the thing a huge budget, but is it for stunts or for special effects. I'd hate to see Mad Max just become a grittier Bond franchise. It's too bad Brian May isn't around as I really loved what he did on the first two. I think Jarre's score for the 3rd is one of the best scores I've ever heard, the only decent element to come out of that sad 3rd film. Still, I'd be surprised if they asked him to do this one. Given how Gibson films have had Horner scores, God Forbid!!!

Elliot Goldenthal or Danny Elfman to carry on the percussive tradition of tension-saturated music set by Brian May.

Hm.

I love Jarre's score for the last picture, and would love to see him score the new one.

However... should Jarre not return, I think that the film would need another powerhouse score like the first three... but, like the The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome, it should have that element of melancholy.

Therefore, while Poledouris would make a great choice, the idea of Christopher Gordon is an inspired one, as well. I certainly think that he'd definitely have a great grasp on the human element of the story without losing sight of the action.

The problem that I have with making another Mad Max film is that there is a definite arc over the course of the three films as Max develops from Anti-Hero to Mythic Figure; where could they possibly go from there?

Actually, I am going to dance around the active roster of Media Ventures by suggesting the reunion of the Con-Air team--Mark Mancina and Trevor Rabin. That score had a real Apocalyptic feel to it. I like the suggestion of Poledouris as well.

I'm with you Norman... Although Elliot Goldenthal could pull it off too, I always thought the stuff he did for Heat had an apocalyptic "Mad Max" feel to it. I actually love the Mad Max films and am very excited to see what Miller has come up with, I'm also glad that Gibson is reprising the role. I can only hope that whoever composes the music does a reprise of that wonderful string theme from The Road Warrior that goes over the prologue. That music, coupled with the narration and those lonely shots of max is one of my favorite paarts of the entire series. My favorite is still the end of the original Mad Max when he gives johnny boy a "choice" at the end.

My great hope is that Media Ventures will be kept as far away from this one as possible.

Of course, I would like MV kept as far away from film music as possible in general...

...anyway, back to the suggestions...

I was thinking that perhaps James Newton Howard or Christopher Young might provide an interesting score...

Well, how about a really refreshing change and let a FEMALE composer score the movie. We don't believe that only a man can score action films, do we? Personally, I'd love to see what a filmscore gal could do with this kind of broad musical canvas. Shirley Walker? Anne Dudley? C'mon, let the sisters handle the testosterone for once

Shirley Walker can do it. But Anne Dudley? NO WAY!
And Lolita Romanis can do it too.
But Rachel Portman can't. I wasn't impressed at all with her work on Hart's War.

Sounds good to me, Justin. I think, more than likely, the film would be scored by an Australian. The whole thing will probably get made in the studios in Australia, crewed by Australians. Simon Walker would also make for an exciting candidate. His score for For The Term Of His Natural Life is terrific.

Anne Dudley may not seem like an obvious choice for a muscular Max score, but she's a versatile composer. Her score for THE CRYING GAME showed that she could write sensitive, complex emotional music AND pulse-poundingly tense material for the assassination sequence. Her scoring of the train robbery in BUSTER was exciting, in a totally different kind of style.

Simple test: go listen to the growling orchestral fury of the "Raiders" cue from AMERICAN HISTORY X, and then come back and tell me she can't write music for Mad Max

I would say it depends in what direction they take the film.

My vote would be for Shearmur in a Reign of Fire vein.

Perhaps since Icon is involved Mel might go with someone familar...perhaps Nick Glennie Smith (after We Were Solders) or James Horner who he has a fairly strong history with. Here's the Moviemusic schedule (dates subject to change):

T-12months: Speculation about the composer. Obligatory MV and James Horner potshots. Knowing nothing about the film, some people insist that it will be a stinker.

T-6months: Teaser trailer released, composer choice announced--Media Ventures. Even though the choice is not James Horner, a few more comments about how it would have sucked had he been involved ensue. The Coalition for an MV Free America (CMVFA) begins to Protest.

T-2month: A fairly interesting full length trailer released...the CMVFA picket outside of theatres playing the trailer. James Horner spotted in Iceland.

T-0: The film is released with a half-way decent score, but speculation runs rampant about what might have been. Not suprisingly, those who had convinced themselves that the film would be a stinker 12-months ago voice that they were right.

The rest of us enjoy the film as a two-hour diversion and move on to the next rumormill/composer bashing session.

Film at 11.

For MAD MAX 4?? Uhhh... I thought George Miller was the only one gonna write it.... if Smith does (and I thought he was busy writing SCARY MOVIE 3 for David Zucker).... I can't say whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing....

Do you have a URL to the E! Online article?

If true (and that's a BIG if), Kevin Smith has written some good stuff in the comic book field for Marvel in the past few years. He could be a smart choice for a script polish because I suspect he'd approach the material both as a fan and an "outsider."

Still, my understanding is that Miller has a script that he and Fox are happy with. It's shooting in May, so that doesn't leave time for a radical re-think.

Dan,

What I actually read was a new bit on Sci-Fi Wire..

quote:
E! Online columnist Anderson Jones reported that Dimension has hired director Kevin Smith (Dogma) to write the screenplay for the proposed fourth Mad Max movie.

So take it for what it's worth. I couldn't find a link on E's page (their site is hard to navigate anyways).

So, SciFi Wire goofed, considering Dimension isn't doing MAD MAX 4 - Fox is. I think they meant SCARY MOVIE 3, since Smith IS doing that one - and it's a Dimension film.
