King Conan: Crown of Iron: Looks like hopes of seeing this third "Conan" on adventure have been dashed. IGN FilmForce reports that John Milius, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Larry and Andy Wachowski and Warner Brothers have all been given the shaft from working on the project in pretty much any capacity. Seems that Conan Properties Inc., the company that owns the Conan character, has decided not to allow Warners or the Wachowski's to renew their option on the film rights - an option that's apparently about to expire. The company is allegedly upset with how long the project was taking to develop, whilst the Wachowski's ongoing commitment to finishing "The Matrix" sequels meant it wouldn't have advanced any faster. However the project isn't entirely dead, CP Inc. wants to develop "a kinder, gentler Conan" which'll use "The Scorpion King" as a template (ie. they want a PG-13 family safe adventure). For now though, everything we know or have learned about the third Conan has been rendered void by this decision.
I was really hoping to hear Poledouris revisit the territory which helped him produce his career greatest work. Conan The Barbarian.posted 11-26-2002 07:34 AM PT (US)

That sucks....Right now Basil is working on Kevin Costner's new film, OPEN RANGE. I'm eagerly looking forward to this one - any opportunity for Basil to do a western is very very cool!

This is Fantastic news. Basil was originally going to do "Dances With Wolves," but scheduling conflicts with John Milius' "Flight of the Intruder" prevented it. If he had scored it, it might have been Basil walking home with an Oscar instead of John Barry. (Not to say Barry's score wasn't wonderful or deserving that year.)This will be Basil's second Costner film after "For The Love of the Game," and I hope he knocks this out out of the park. We need MORE scores from this wonderful and talented man!

Good for Basil! It's worth repeating: Basil Poledouris is one of the best composers in Hollywood that works so infrequently. The man has too much talent to allow him to sit at home!

As for "kinder and gentler Conan," isn't that an oxymoron?

Let's see the positive side: a potentially piece of overblown crap of a movie dashed.

Choses to work when he wants and still picks crummy movies and delivers average scores?
Diagnostic: he used up all his talent.

And it's just plain average.
- The 'chinese' theme sounds gimmicky and artificial the way it is presented.
- The action music is a stylistic derivative of Jungle Book, Free Willy and other scores (nothing wrong with that - it's his style), without the melodic appeal those scores had, making the action stuff pretty generic (there's something boring about that).
- The softer parts are nice, but quite forgettable.
The Touch: average. generic.
(oh yeah, and one of the worst sounding scores of recent memory, topped with a laughable orchestral performance)

The only "release" of FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER that I know of is the Soundtrack Library bootleg CDR.

Costner didn't get JNH again?new Poledouris scores are something to look forward to, though he is very hit and miss.
For Love of the Game is a fine score.
What a nice position to be in, to work when and if you want to.
