After enjoying his scores for Steal Magnolias and rejected SWTWC, can anyone make any suggestions? I want to expanded on his scores. What's worth hearing? what were considered his masterpieces or his highlights?

if you REALLY want to start with Delerue, get Varese's 2 Disc Great Composer's compilation, which basically acts as a summary of the 3 London Sessions CDs.

the 2 new CDs by Disques Cinemusique (Un Homme Amoureux and Promise at Dawn) are short on production value, but long on musical value.

I would LOVE to see someone be able to re-release his score called Chouans!, a powerhouse score, IMO.

the other posters have recommended some good stuff. Try it.

And, thanks to Prometheus, one can finally listen to The Black Stallion Returns on CD, one of Delerue's best scores. The Varese London Sessions discs are a good introduction to Delerue, absolutely. I also recommend Universal Jazz France's release of Le Mepris, which also includes cuts from a number of other Delerue scores. Le Mepris is gorgeous...

Delerue is one of those composers that it's nearly impossible to go wrong with. Every score he has composed is great. "Diên Biên Phù"(1992) one of his last scores is quite extraordinary. The first 2 cues is from the "Concerto de l'adieu" and is ½ hour of amazing music. The rest of the score isn't so impressive a bit of organ music and then piano. I also love his "Black robe"(1991), which is too depressing for some though. Excellent love theme, and the choral piece at the end is one of my all-time favorites. "Thibaud the Crusader"(1968) is very much inspired by Rozsa's music especially "El Cid", but is also mixed with a big dose of vintage Delerue. Great score that one as well.

I'm a bit of a Delerue ignoramus - I'm aware of his work, and I grew up taping his themes direct from TV. I particularly remember his "mock-classical" themes (that sounds terrible, but you know what I mean) for ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS and A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. Also his gorgeous "mock-classical" (someone tell me the right term!) DAY OF THE DOLPHIN.

But he has been evading my collection for some reason. I do recommend his score from AMAZING STORIES - "Dorothy And Ben", released a while back by Varese on a great re-recording with the RSNO conducted by John Debney. It's brief, but lovely (and you'll also get the stupendous John Williams music for the first episode "The Mission").

you may as well just call it "neoclassical" because it's new, modern music written and orchestrated, basically, in a retro-style.

Yes, Neoclassical is what you would call music that is not quite Classical, but uses elements nonetheless.

All seem good suggestions, but with money so tight, these are mroe like January/February purchases... la la.....
But The Black Stallion Returns and Platoon seem like good starters.

And i would like to thank everyone that has replied so far. It was a sad day when i finally did a little research on Delerue and found out he had passes away not so long ago. Can it be 10 years have allready passed? How time so easily slips through our hands.

Those are good ones Justin but if you love beautiful orchestral/choir music then do not under any circumstance pass on 'Agnes Of God' which for me is one of those rare scores that I can play from begining to end without at times wanting to hit the 'skip' button, this music is ecstatic in it's beauty!...damnit, I'm gonna play it right now...

NP : about to put the above on

Timmer, i'll add that too the list.

On a side note, i did not totally agree with you on A Far Off Place. Just didn't strike me like it did you, but after the way you described Agnes of God, i am very curious. It is still on cd?

That I do not know? if not it would be worth getting the Varese 'Georges Delerue The London Sessions Volume III' which has a 9:38 suite of the score plus another favorite of mine 'True Confessions' which runs at 11:50 as well as other goodies, in fact all three volumes are very good! If you find 'Agnes' on CD and DON'T like it I'll willingly buy it off you (though I really am confident on this one that you will like it...a lot!), particularly as the one I have is on LP!

Sorry you didn't like A Far Off Place as much as I do, being a film score fan is like travelling roads where at times our paths cross and at others we steer in different directions...it would be a boring message board if we all had the same taste and views

Listening for the first time to Agnes of God, True Confessions and (still to hear) Tours du Monde / Tours de Ciel, I almost believe that heaven and earth are not entirely incommensurable. What a powerful composer Delerue was.

Good to hear that Franz....his music is so achingly gorgeous it hurts.

Justin, did you ever manage to get hold of Agnes Of God? If you didn't like it (surely an impossibility?! ) I'm still in the market for a CD purchase.

p.s. the short score for A Man For All Seasons would make a great double bill with Anne Of The Thousand Days )

    Timmer,

My Agnes of God is a CD-R that resulted from a trade with a Delerue fan. I was on the verge of buying a copy of the original for a very affordable $10.50 US when I discovered the seller wasn't willing to ship outside of the US.

If you want to know where I was going to get it from in case you want to get that copy, email me and I'll be happy to let you know.

No, I never found or looked for it.
Though I probably should, but you never know - someone might release it in a year or two.

As listed above, if you can ever find a copy of "Tours du Monde, Tours du Ciel" (rare), give it a listen. This is a short work, but sublime.

It's extremely difficult to find an original. My 'copy' went bad... devastating!

You're right about the short and sublime bits - I couldn't believe that combined length of the last few tracks was less than a minute. Tracks 1 to 6 are magnificent though - and to think I got a CDR of it by accident!
