OK, I work at a theater. I mix music. Since everyone at work is getting sick of listening to Music For A Darkened Theater, Lord Of The Rings and John William's greatest hit, I figued I put together a CD of mixes I've made. Now my question is, what kind of legal issues are there for this??? I haven't done it and wont due if I am gonna get sued or something.

I doubt you'll be any worse off than you already are playing the ones you mentioned above. Ask TimT - he's been doing this for years now...

Yes I have been doing this for years. Um... does your theater use the Movie Tunes disc provided by NCN? Most theaters do.
In thier contract, You must play thier CDs, and nothing else with thier CDs, Nor can you play CDs from the previous month.

But this rule is never enforced. :-p Even the theater checkers never say anything if something else is playing.

Some CDs say "Unauthorized... public performance and brodcasting prohibited". So I think that lets you know the legal issue right there. However very few CDs actually say that. And are just conecered with making copies.

Are you a managaer or a projectionist? becuase you may also need thier authorization.

Anyway.....:-) I ignore most of that stuff. And just have fun :-p

The main things to be concerned about:

First if the music is listenable. Believe it or not but you can actually get complaints for scores like Total Recall!!! I found out the hard way that the majority of people think of intense action music as just plain Head-ache noise! Remember 98% percent of the customers are not into film scores! What we precieve as being an awsome ecxiting score, is usually nothing special or an annoyance to most people.
And the people who tolerate scores only like the themes, not the under score.

And I'd stick to the current stuff, because if you play scores to films that came out more than 4 months ago, as good as that score may be, NOONE but a small few will have a clue what it is. And that ruins the fun.

Also don't play anything that you think maybe offessive. While playing the Silva's Essential Goldsmith compliation one day There were some unhappy concerns about The Omen suite. Noone realised it from the Omen movie but they understood the lyrics! And were wondering what the hell we were doing. I know you're thinking, its just music! But these are you paying customers and your reputation you are dealing with, so its foolish to argue.

Another thing is volume. Some CDs come through very loudly across the speakers, be sure to normalize the audio so that its just at a background level. Instead of sounding like the movie is actually on. Everybody hates that~!

The point is just to put yourself in the shoes of the non film music listener. What would you think it memorable? listenable?
I like to stand at the back the auditorium and listen for comments about the music playing. That gives me an idea of what works.

Scores likes Total Recall, Die Another Day, The Abyss, Spider-man, Sixth Sense, The Omen, Signs, DO NOT WORK!

Play scores with themes that people latch on to. Play Spiderman, but the opening track, play the Batman theme, etc...

I get sick of the stupid MovieTunes crap, and was overjoyed to hear the suite from Close Encounters last time I was at a theater! I don't want to hear some crappy pop band, I want to hear Movie Music while I'm seeing a MOVIE! go figure!

for mass appeal, play stuff by Thomas Newman, Delerue, or Patrick Doyle, or Nino Rota, or Rachel Portman. Accessible themes. Strings, easy on the big brass.
Stuff that will obviuosly connect. And it ought to be stuff that's easily available to buy, online or otherwise.

not Total Recall for goodness sake. It's good, but that will mostly appeal to score geeks like us.

If you want the quintessential Hollywood sound for the theater, pump out some old Rozsa, Waxman, or Bernstein.

Ken, you always bring laughter to my world!

The rest of you are so lucky. Everytime I go to the Cincinnati cinemas, they're playing the local pop music radio stations. Not that I have a problem with that, it's just it would be so much better if there was film music to listen to instead of standard radio top 20 & disc jockeys.

    with love as always,
    the filmscore gal,

We don't use the NCN discs. We've never been involved with them. Right now I am trained as a projectionist, working as a concessionist... Don't ask, strange situation.

I have an awesome Lord Of The Rings suite that I made. It's like 12 minutes long, i am pretty good that will be good. Right now I am working on Attack of the Clones. I also have the End Credits from the first Harry Potter film. What other scores should I have on there? JJH you listed composers, but I barely have any CD's by those composers. Except Thomas Newman, but I don't think very much of his music is THAT suitable.

I just thought of some! Do ya'll think the opening track from While You Were Sleeping would be good? And how about Dragonheart since they're both used in so many fricken trailers!

    You lucky people.

Our local multiplex is owned by the people who own a huge radio station here which plays non-stop pop. So guess what we get to hear during intermissions?

How about playing the "Theme" or "End Titles" music to the actual film that is being presented? That way, the music may actually seep into people's minds and make the film music a bit more effective. Even if it is only "Hey, where have I heard that music before?" During "Lawrence of Arabia" the "Theme" to the film was played during the intermission which I think is a great idea...like an "Interlude" during an Opera.
Find a "key" track from the score, assuming you have it, and play that. It will link up with the movie after all. Its just a shame that the big Film companies dont think to do this as part of the whole Cinema package. I'm sure most people would enjoy hearing "Hedwig's theme" during the intermission of "Harry Potter" or the "Star Wars" theme during AOTC etc etc.

We have 6 screen and they're all playing different movies. And since they're all playing different movies, we can't have the theme for each movie playing on each theme. Plus if we were able to do that, it would be annoying having to put the theme on repeat. But that was a good idea.

What do you guys think of Rudy? Would that be a good one to have on there? I need more suggestions. I think when I get my paycheck I will run out and get Treasure Planet. But that's about all I can afford (I just bought a new sound system).

    Right now I have:

Lord Of The Rings: FOTR Sute (12:00)
    Jurassic Park Trilogy Suite (14:13)
Harry Potter 1 End Credits (8:01)

    What else should I have?

We have Harry Potter 2, Santa Clause 2, Die Another Day, Half Past Dead, Auto-Focus and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Out of all those I can only play the scores from Harry Potter 2 and Die Another Day. So that's not gonna work to good. Unless I wanna play cRap from Half Past Dead.
