I don't normally post this stuff to the message boards (updates go out via the MM Store subscription... click "newsletters" above to sign up), but here goes:A truckload of OOP Varese titles arrived today, and the prices are the lowest you'll find for these at present. Goldenthal, Goldsmith, Morricone, Williams, Edelman, Elfman, etc etc. Limited quantities, so if you've been meaning to pick these up, now's the time to get 'em for cheap. And with dollar shipping, now we're really talkin' bargains.
The Young Lions/This Earth Is Mine! (Friedhofer)
Golden Gate (Goldenthal)
Demolition Man (Goldenthal)
Pet Sematary (Goldenthal)
The River (Williams)
The Eiger Sanction (Williams)
Bat-21 (Young)
Chain Reaction (Goldsmith)
Criminal Law (Goldsmith)
LifeForce (Mancini)
Body Bags (Carpenter)
Dolores Claiborne (Elfman)
The Quest (Edelman)
Come See The Paradise (Edelman)
Class Action (Horner)
Crossing the Line (Morricone)
Sketch Artist (Isham)
Ciao ciao! Happy shopping....What do people think of these? Be honest about Criminal Law....

If I didn't already have the River, Chain Reaction, and LifeForce, I would get them. These 3 are wonderful scores (the river is a virtually unknown Williams score). They are getting very hard to find nowadays, so pick em up if you get a chance.on another note, I want to thank PeterK for his excellent shipping service. I had a question about an arrival date and he not only answered me on a weekend, but emailed me a few days later to check if things arrived ok! Great work!
BobaMikeps: Demolition Man has the great Confronting the Chief cue! Almost worth buying the whole cd for. (it was used in the Men in Black trailers to great effect)

There are maybe four or five on this list that I do want....

If I can scrounge up the bread, I need to replace my tapes of Criminal Law and The River...the first four cues on the River are essential Williams, lovely guitar work by Tommy Tedesco. Criminal Law isn't as bad as some think, although the cd would be 'bottlecap city' on my shelf....a nice listen in the rain, and I like Jeff Bond's comparison of the score to his Twilight Zone work.I do HIGHLY recommend the Friedhofer set, Young Lions and This Earth is Mine...over 80mins. of gorgeous melodies, subtle and thoughtful harmonic writing, good Kevin Mulhall notes, even some driven action scoring in 'Lions'. A great intro to this unsung composer, one I need to hear more of myself.
Also, Bat-21 is a great buy, mixing Goldsmithian ostinati in heavy percussion, against brass and shakuhachi melodies with a gorgeous, solemn theme. One of my favorite Young albums, it's well put together, alternating the slow themes with action cues, what I call a 'leapfrog' sequence. The action cues will just rock the hell out of ya, terrific for driving too, and most of them are long enough to develop a good 'groove'.NP: nothing, but the List Of Adrian Messenger(Goldsmith) is stuck in me brain

Like I said at the last chat:I think Eiger Sanction is a very enjoyable album. Anybody who loves 1970s pop-flavored stuff should pick this up. While you're at it, avoid the movie at all costs.
Criminal Law is a horrid pile of crap and I must offer my best of luck to Peter for attempting to make a profit off of it.

Golden Gate (Goldenthal)I'd like to hear.
Demolition Man (Goldenthal)
I have.
Cool synth track in there.Pet Sematary (Goldenthal)
I'd like to hear (though people seem to say it's not too good).
The River (Williams)
I have.
Agree with Sean, lovely guitar work. I first heard track 4 (IIRC) in a Mono RealAudio version and was very surprised when I got the CD and there suddenly were TWO guitars. The Eiger Sanction (Williams)
I have. Excellent JW score.

FOLKS!"The Young Lions/This Earth Is Mine!" is TWO CD's for the low price of ONE. Plus, they are both excellent works.
In regards to "The Eiger Sanction" CD. It's an excellent Jazz S.T.
I thank God I already have these goodies.
If you don't already have these CD's yet......GET THEM NOW!!! You won't be sorry IMHO.

Friedhofer: Two CDs which would have fit on one.
But it's still great music, which also has good sound given the dark ages it was recorded in.

...also, Golden Gate is a superb Goldenthal album, showing that subtle, atmospheric side of his work....Nice and relaxing, I think it's one of his best scores, one you can safely go to bed with nightly.Pet Sematary....it's not in his top works, and I have a bias for it since I had fun seeing the film at the drive in(?!?!) back in '89 and getting the old cassette the next day. The main theme is a total riff on Schifrin's AMITYVILLE HORROR, something I didn't find out until years later. Lots of synths and strings here, no brass and percussion, and the album is from the 'Tom Null-resequence-the-holy-hell-out-of-'em' School of thought. Worth it if you like his sad, piano adagios, avoid if you only appreciate his trilling brass and bodyslamming percussion scores.
Best,

Totally agreed on Golden Gate, man... Great score that holds up on its own and totally effective in the movie.

Robocop 2! This was one of the very first albums I ever bought. And I learned one of my first lessons about soundtracks as a result.....if a different composer scores a sequel than he probably will not use the previous composer's themes. I had hoped that Poledouris' Robocop theme would be on this cd as well. I had not seen Robocop 2 (I was like 11)...and boy was I dissapointed! All this score has is "ROOOOBOOOOCOOOP!" sung very cheesily. The main theme is stoo much like Star Trek 4 for my tastes, but I know a lot of people enjoy this score....so check it out!

To Die For - Really for Elfman completists. Nice, but nothing special. The suite on Music for a Darkened Theatre vol 2 covers the score adequately.Article 99 - If you enjoyed the Danny Elfman who did all that dark gothic stuff in the early 90’s and Edward Scissorhands, then this is a great CD. It is from that period and shares some of the same qualities.
Mrs. Doubtfire- A little short, but choice stuff that represents the score fairly well. Always nice to hear Doyle especially in a genre he is not known for.
Under Siege 2 - Piss poor film with a great score. Honestly, hard to go wrong with anything by Poledouris. Beats Gary Chang’s score for the first one by a light year or so.
Richie Rich - If you are an Alan Silvestri devotee and are really into his comedic life support scores (Please tell me where to laugh) then this is probably for you. To me it sounds like a whole lot of his other scoring. Again, a score for Silvestri completists
Robocop 2 – Too much of departure from the first film in my view. Rosenman doesn’t have Poledouris’s talent for melodic scoring and the score feels flat to me
Robocop 3 – If you have number one, you probably don’t need this. The director obviously gave strict instructions to make it like the first one as much as possible. If you don’t have Robocop, then this is a fine substitute. Then again, this is Poledouris so it sure sounds good.
Love Field – I haven’t heard this score, but I am suspicious of any Goldsmith score that has garnered neither love nor hate mail from the Goldsmith/Anti-Goldsmith crowd. Makes me think it is too mediocre to bother with. I am sure that someone will correct me in some fashion shortly.
The rest are not known to me, but I do enjoy Jarre’s non synth works and Bill Conti can do interesting things, so I might take a flyer on those (pending clarification on the synth status of Enemies).

Enemies by Jarre is scored for small ensemble and 'keyboard'(probably an EVI), hardly a real synth score....it's mostly Klezmer clarinet Yiddish music, one I never really got into, since the love theme is often broken up by that polka party Yiddish stuff....For Giora Feidman and Jarre completists only...Feidman is the amazing clarinet player who handles the solos here and on Schindler's List as well.
