What a marvellous piece of filmmaking this is and what an opportune time for film music fans to see/hear Bernstein pull a major artistic coup in these days of film music shellac.

Here here.I think this is a wonderful "homage" to a style of film that has really gone unrecognized for some time.
While Elmer deserves all the acclaim and attention he is getting, I was surprised to find that the score didn't hit me on the emotional level of his work on "The Good Mother," "Rambling Rose," and "Frankie Starlight." This is NOT to say it isn't a wonderful and perfect score for the film. I think the advance word on it just built it up a bit for me.
Let's hope we get to see Elmer get, at the very least, an Oscar nomination for his work on this film. Lord knows he is long overdue for this kind of attention.

I not only love the score...I love the movie too. I think I was one of the few who saw it in the theatre.James

The music stopped me from getting all hung-up on the period (read: dated) dialogue and pulled me into the horror the poor lady confronted with so much humble dignity. It was a sympathy-inducing score, to say the least.
