Just been watching the Enforcer – the third entry in the Dirty Harry saga – and have felt enthusiastic about Jerry Fielding’s score – no surprise indeed.
From a marvelous piece of energetic big band jazz complete with funky guitar and electric bass for a rooftop chase, to his dinstictive percussive style embedded in pizzicati strings and rumbling piano for the final assault on Alcatraz, this is another occasion to sorely miss Jerry Fielding’s voice.
And an opportunity to ask for its release – which label takes care of Warner’s archives nowadays?

Incidentally, the picture itself is your average cop movie, fortunately not trying to compete with Siegel’s classic and boasting a terrific performance from Tyne Daly.

I absolutely love that score, Sir T! You describe it pretty well. That was the great Art Pepper on alto sax, by the way, with Ronnie Lang on tenor and Bill Perkins on baritone. Those same soloists contributed great work too on that other cracker of a Fielding score THE GAUNTLET.

I don't know what the chances are of getting a full score release. Three tracks from it have been around for a while, but, of course a lot is missing, even though the film was hardly overscored - I watched the movie many years ago just to make a mental note of the different cues. Maybe there's about half an hour of music in the film.

SirT and Graham, I have been a Fielding fan for many years. What got me first to notice him was his very good percussion work.

I have that Lp of the Dirty Harry scores with those Enforcer cues on it. I bought that Gaunlet Lp for 1.99 on sale in 1981, boy was it great. Super score.

Wild Bunch is super and Nightcomers excellent also. See ya, J.

Yes indeed, John. I was thinking today about some other Jerry Fielding scores where he used jazz to great effect (I was imagining what could beef up an ENFORCER release to the hour-plus mark), and I remembered his brilliant title music for Michael Winner's much-maligned update of THE BIG SLEEP - a brilliant piece of music, which Fielding himself obviously liked (he re-used it for the TV movies MATT HELM - Tony Franciosa, I think, in the old Dean Martin part; and HUNTERS ARE FOR KILLING - with Burt Reynolds if I'm not mistaken). I don't know how long the complete scores are. Another brilliant gutsy piece of Fielding jazz was heard over the titles of LITTLE LADIES OF THE NIGHT - to depict hookers, of course.

Better late than never! Scheduled originally for release just after Aleph's Magnum Force CD in July 2005, The Enforcer is now coming at the end of June 2007.

The CD is in hand and Graham, you are right... about 35 minutes of score. There's an additional alternate end title cue that brings the total running time up to about 40 minutes.

Nick Redman sees this through, also wrote the liner notes along with Tyne Daly. Credits are complete, too.... just look at all these veteran players. Ronnie Lang and Bill Perkins are included under "woodwinds" while Art Pepper gets the solo credit under "sax."

    Nice to hear this, wow...

Sweet! Didn't realize he'd played on the score (along with the other players). Looking forward to this even more

Had an advance copy this week and it sounds great. This is probably one of Fielding's more accessible scores for those who don't know his music it's a perfect place to start.
