After many years, I revisited via TMC Wyler’s The Children’s Hour with Audrey
Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. What an absolutely lovely score by Alex North. (Sure
didn’t sound like Dragonslayer or Cleopatra.) Lovely main theme. I really enjoyed the
way North continued to play the poignant melody when Hepburn rushes back to the house
sensing something was wrong with MacLaine. He continued the melody and slowly
added underneath an escalating and pulsating dissonance. Not probably an original idea
but very emotionally effective to the whole scene. This score seemed a little more
traditional than those we usually associate North with like Spartacus, Cleopatra, and A
Streetcar Named Desire. I haven’t seen this score discussed, but if you have a chance,
check it out. (In 1961 the movie was considered gutsy and brave. Very tame by today’s standards.)

I totally agree with you. The music perfectly fits the atmosphere of the film, especially with so many dark undertones. I just saw this movie the other night and would really like to have a copy of the music somehow. The score is however not in print, nor is there a rescored version available.

There is a "okay" sounding "Private Release" of this score. I have it. You may want to try some of the specialty outlets to see if they still have it.

Joan, I like just about anything by him. That extra music on the Misfits CD is really good. That real long cue with four parts is really good. J.
