Holy crap! It's the ninth and the thread is on the second page?! This simply won't do. I've got something:

Thir13en Ghosts (John Frizzell; ***1/2; a bit more sound design than I expected, but still a good listen)

Among others this month I purchased Below by Revell. I am quite enjoying this CD, perhaps in part due to my initial low expectations.

Got a nice present the other day - JOHN BARRY: 40 YEARS OF FILM MUSIC (Silva re-recordings, 4 CDs, Nic Raine at Smecky studios):

There are some questionable interpretations of course, but much of it is very good indeed. Arranged in chronological order, what struck me was how... boring...John Barry has become since about, oooh, twenty years ago?. In general. And I still love him.

    Received in October:

SMILLA'S SENSE OF SNOW (Harry Gregson-Williams)
    HAMLET (Ennio Morricone)
THE BLACK CAULDRON (Elmer Bernstein; Varese issue)
    RAMBLING ROSE (Elmer Bernstein)
EVIL UNDER THE SUN (Cole Porter arr. John Lanchberry)
GOTHIC DRAMAS (TV scores) (Ennio Morricone)

I've cut down a lot! There's not enough to select a CD of the Month, but I've always liked the EVIL UNDER THE SUN score. GOTHIC DRAMAS is very heavy going, and pretty depressing.

It's been awhile so I thought I'd contribute my recent purchases, most from either Screen Archives (thanks Craig!) or Gerry at Soundtrackers:

THE SHADOW OF THE WOLF, Jarre - extremely impressive, my God, that theme is phenomenal! The electronic stuff is hit&miss, but all the orchestral material is top notch, what a find!

RUBY CAIRO, Barry - Heard these tracks through Napster two years ago, nice to have them in better sound! It's an underrated Barry score, nice ethnic flavor and addictive theme.

FRIDA, Goldenthal - The film was great and the score worked wonders within it, here on disc the songs take center stage but it's a nice, stripped down score from Goldenthal, far removed from his well-known works. Great guitar work.

WIND, Poeldouris - Again, great thematic material and he melds electronics and orchestral sounds in a compelling way only matched by Goldsmith.

TITAN A.E., Revell - I've only skimmed it, but I like it so far!

NEMESIS, Goldsmith - The action material is wonderfully vigorous and there are some nice, plaintive passages, though it takes a bit to build. It will develop more meaning during subsequent listenings.

With only four euros in my pocket, I went across to the fruit and veg-mongers to get the weekly greens. There, nestling amongst some sprouts was LOST IN SPACE (Bruce Broughton plus songs). Oh, how I wished it had been the full score release. But what do you expect from the local grocers? And at only 3.99 it was a real bargain (which meant I came away without the greens).
