    Hey all,

Just rewatched this film the other day on 5.1 DVD and introduced it to some friends as well...

They doubted that it would be any good but by the end they were converts.

Myself? I got reaquainted with Goldsmith's score and how fantastic it really is. I think, like any weak film, Senor Goldsmith can really help drive a film along. Although, IMHO, 13th Warrior doesn't need (much) help.

After the film one of my friends wanted to watch the trailer and he noticed it listed Graeme Revell.....

    huh?

I remember hearing that this film had had trouble and had been shelved for a while. I think Michael Chrichton fired John McTiernan...or something.

I really would like to see a longer version of this film and am curious if Revell scored anything for it.

I'm SURE Jerry's would beat the living-*%@#! out of Revell's...but I still can't help but wonder.

Anyone know more about this than I do???

    Thanks!!!

    Meegle,

    So I'm told:

Revell had the entire score written for McTiernan's version of the film. When Crichton came in, Revell's music got tossed. I can't help but wonder if Crichton even listened to it. Thankfully he opted for Goldsmith (an incredible score, no doubt), though I have to say - Revell's rejected score is pretty darn good.

    The bottom line:

A lot of folks have Revell's score on CD... I'm sure most anyone who's into trading can help ya.

Crichton was at the first test screening of the film I was present at, which was temped with stuff like THE CROW, WATERWORLD, and others. (It was before Revell wrote his score.) Given that, and given Crichton's constant presence every step along the way, it's likely he heard Revell's score at some point before taking over the project.

I actually like Revells score. It's one of his better ones.

What about Mark Isham's Waterworld? Did he record anything for it?

Also, did Basil record anything for Detox?

My understanding is that Isham wrote the music box theme that appears in the film....

    (or something like that...)

When The Thirteenth Warrior first opened, the critics slaughtered it. Still, I went to
hear Goldsmith’s score. I think his main warrior theme is one of the best themes ever
composed. I love this muscular score. Intellectually I know the critics were right about
the weaknesses of the film, but it is still a guilty pleasure of mine. I kind of enjoy this silly
movie, and I’d love to see an uncut or extended version.

My fave tracks are "The Sword Maker" and "Underwater Escape".

The latter of which sounds MUCH much better in 5.1 than off the cd. The particular part when they're underwater sounds way WAY different in the film than off the cd score.

    anyway...

How can I get Revell's score?

I wonder if Omar Shariff and the blonde-girl are in the story more?

They should release the 3 hour version under the title "Eaters of the Dead"...

    ...anyone here read the book???

The original opening Persia sequence was close to 20-30 minutes long, and had a LOT of Omar Sharif.
