    How is the score?
Not that anyone actually saw the film...

One nutty amateur reviewer said this:
    (from here

    quote:

The result: the least satisfying of the three but with a creepy ending that is brought to life by the infusion of a refreshing heavy metal score that replaces the tiresome unoriginal and repetitive score of Music composer John Frizzell.

So according to this person, Frizzell's score is tiresome, unoriginal and repetitive, but there is a refreshing heavy metal bit towards the end (which might be a song).

Varèse Sarabande says it's a "gothic orchestral score".

A 'report' from the movie's premere says:

    quote:

Tackling ‘13 Ghosts’ was no different than any other project he’s handled, but it did allow him to experiment with his tools of the trade. “I really utilized a lot of new technology. Utilizing the surround aspect of the film, using some new technology to move sounds around the theater,” said Frizzell. He hopes the techniques he used will expand within the industry in the near future. “I really had a kick with the technology!”

Oh goody! More experimental stuff. Hope it's better than FearDotCom...

    yes, I saw the movie!

sometimes you gotta see a train wreck.

I wouldn't call it a gothic score. Whoever wrote that at Varese got it all wrong.

the one theme that predominates is an actually quite lovely theme for some little girl that died on the ship. It IS repeated ad nauseum, however.

but I can't really blame Frizzell. Whoever directed the movie couldn't make up his mind on several issues, one of which was the musical design -- simply all over the map.

Thanks JJ. I guess the Ghost Ship score would be a bit like 13 Ghosts, which was also tried different genres from what I can recall.

by the way, I really did like the old-style music in the opening -- really off-putting, as you don't think the movie you're going to see is a shipwreck (movie).
Makes heavy use of "Senza fine," a very nice song I had only previously known from DeVol's Flight of the Phoenix.

This is actually a really nice score. I've been largely disappointed by Frizzell's stuff thus far, as it's not even really sounded like anyone else's stuff so much as sounding like just plain noise. For whatever known reason i actually bought 13 GHOSTS' score and returned it within days, it was cacophonous and not something I felt like keeping around. Some stuff on TEACHING MRS TINGLE is ok and there are flickers of interesting things in DANTE'S PEAK.

But this score's pretty darn good. In fact, one of the better elements of the movie that helps make it at least tolerable. Instead of just a lot of BLLLLAAAAATTTT brass stuff, as in most of Frizell's genre work, there's some pensive, suspenseful, nicely modulated cues and I'm looking forward to actually owning this one.

And, yes, while I don't much care for the Italian song at the beginning, it was a goofy-throwback-classy way of starting the movie w/the credits and all, very inspired.

Also: found the song used during the one flashback part (anyone who sees it know what I means, I don't wanna spoil it for others) really inappropriate...yet oddly interesting, too. jarring in how it took me out of the movie, very music video-y suddenly and not period or particularly appropriate to the movie's rhythm, but I'd be interested to know if the song's on the album.

I have never liked a Frizzel score before, but I thought Ghost Ship was rather good. The use of the song at the start was insipired (I hope its on the cd!) and the theme at the end was beautiful.

I didn't mind the techno track at the end, as it seemed to work very well with the images and action.

I know the movie was trashed, but it was not horrible by any means (the sets were great)...I am definately buying the cd!

I don't know why in hell some of the most prominent music in so0undtracks eludes some Varese CDs.

but, if you want "Senza fine" you can get it on FSM's Patton/ Flight of the Phoenix CD. DeVol's score is quite good, and I think in that movie the song is used in a dream sequence. Anyway, I like the version in the Phoenix score more than the Ghost Ship version anyway.
