Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Who here can convince anyone that all (or even one) of these scores/CDs is worth adding to your collection? Or... of all these CDs, which do you think is the best? Or... of all these CDs, which gets the most spin on your player? Or... you should get the idea by now.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks, all. Looking for solid discussion. Been missing as of late. Goodnight.

GAME OF DEATH, good fun score, anyone missing and needing a fix of Barry's 'Bond' sound need look no further, this music (and Barry's The Man With The Golden Gun) turned up in countless chop socky flicks. Also worth having Night Games, I've always loved Barry's choral writing and how can you go wrong with such deliciously obcene track titles as 'Descent Into Decadence', 'The Lesbian Tango', 'The Wet Spot' and 'Phantom Of The Orgasm' ...only Chris Young is on a par with Barry for interesting track names.

NP : Taras Bulba - Waxman

These are excellent scores and you are missing something if you don't have them.
Sophie's Choice has one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.

    That's the story PK!
Time and Best Years are re-recordings, the former done with the composer at the helm and the great Royal Philharmonic - a must have album, I don't remember the original tracks sounding that much different, although there seems to be a movement that prefers them to this recording. The 'Time Machine Waltz' is simply gorgeous.
Best Years, I - shamefully - don't have yet, but the album is under Franco Collura and the London Philharmonic - reportedly a very good performance.

Blue Lagoon is equally essential, and one of Basil buddy's finest works. This thing is packed with beautiful themes in its 35mins.!
Really, you can do no wrong with this one - good liner notes as well. I know some folks don't care for this(why?), so maybe I'm partial, but I can't recommend it enough - those themes are just lovely, unbridled emotion.

    Jane Eyre - see above
Moodier love music here, but Williams fans should be happy not to have to endlessly search ebay for the old Silva disc anymore(it was quite rare a few years ago).

Game of Death and Night Games....how can you go wrong? If you don't like one, you're bound to like the other. Great liners again, two solid albums, and nice to have these very different facets of Barry's writing together. Bond-style action, and romance - nice to hear Barry write some longform cues on Night Games - especially the long waltz and tango.

and the North disc....well, you get 1/3 of Dragonslayer, that should be reason enough to grab this. Cheyenne is getting scarce I suppose, and it's another great one to own - 17mins. worth of this should be enough for those wanting to 'dip a toe' into the North catalogue. Cinerama probably has all the best cues, as that album is eaten up by lots of non-North source cues.

    Good show Peter!
    Sean

Thanks Timmer, OHMSS (Candymans almost back in stock Sean). JJH, Rozsa conducts the Time After Time music, Royal Phil performs; I assume this is the real thing (I know of no other).

I hadn't realized anything about the Night Games film and score (and track names!) until the CDs arrived.... once I looked, I was like... hmmm.... ok.... hmmmm.... ahhhh... hmmmm.... this can't be an American film! The CD needs a PG-13 sticker!

What do you guys think about Revenge if you have/know it? A lot of people write in asking for it, and I don't really know why just by listening to the score. I haven't seen the film, although I am guessing there must be a real "movie music moment." People are looking for the what sounds like the "solo guitar" parts. These parts are beautiful, but nothing super extraordinary, and the rest of the score is ho-hum, the first track sounding a little like the droning synths in Witness. Anyone have the tip on this score and can point out the "movie music moment" that makes people want this?

    Keep up with this....

You can blame Ford Thaxton for thost "Night Games" track titles. He came up with them, not Barry.

"Night Games" is a beautiful score for a truly TERRIBLE Roger Vadim "soft core porn" film from 1979. Barry only did the film because Peter Hunt was the editor.

There's a lot more to the score too. Unfortunately it wasn't on the CD. Basically you have the highlights and best parts.

    James

    Argghhhh! Me wantee Candyman!

The film, Night Games, is a riot as well - a soft focus, real soft core sex fantasy by Roger Vadim with the quasi-fugly Cindy Pickett. Still, nice to hear the score in context though. It's a movie about a guy in a bird suit and various other costumes who comes in the wee hours of the night to bang poor lonely Cindy hehe There is a neat end title cue that was sadly left off the Silva disc as also.

Revenge...I keep hearing that a lot of people like this, and hope someone can divulge more info, since I'd probably like it as well...if it's moody synth music ala' Jarre, I'm in
Saw the film years ago, don't remember a damned note.....on a somewhat similar note, I caught a few minutes of THE BOUNTY last week on tv, and thought it was funny to see Gibson and Hopkins marching around in period costumes to the tune of Vangelis' heavy synths

    Best,
    Sean

That Barry disc isn't one of those lame "LP to CD" things, is it?

My only experience with REVENGE was hearing one cue that was used as temp in a short film I worked on.... it was a cool cue, though nothing worth running out and drooling over the album for (IMHO).

I just remember that the theme to Relative Values sounds a lot like something Goldsmith wrote for Derek Flint.

The same could be said for Relative Values... I've only heard the theme, and I agree that it sounds a lot like Flint. Not sure about the rest, though.
