    For Immediate Release

Winner of a Special Grand Jury Prize for Originality, SECRETARY Explores Darker Vision of Love
Lion’s Gate Records Releases Soundtrack Featuring Score by Angelo Badalamenti and songs by Leonard Cohen and Lizzie West, Available October 8, 2002

(Los Angeles, CA, October 1, 2002) – The winner of a Special Grand Jury Prize for Originality at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Steven Shainberg’s SECRETARY uses bold, unflinching humor and a strange yet seductive eroticism to explore the notion that love doesn’t always occur the way one might expect.

Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is fresh out of a mental institution. She applies for a secretarial position at the law office of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). After one day back with her dysfunctional suburban family, she’s already succumbed to her self-destructive life as a “cutter”. Although she’s never had a job in her life, Lee is hired by the mysterious lawyer. At first the work is normal, but soon they embark on a more personal relationship together.

While SECRETARY toys with expectations of love, sexuality and intimacy, it also explores the delicate balance between pain and healing, control and surrender. Best known for his work with filmmaker David Lynch, composer Angelo Badalamenti creates a score that is both innocent and yet seductive, matching the transformation that Lee undergoes.

Angelo Badalamenti’s breakthrough came with his work on the hit television series Twin Peaks. Originally hooking up with David Lynch for 1986’s cult classic BLUE VELVET, Badalamenti has composed the score for several of Lynch’s films including TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME and LOST HIGHWAY in addition to several other independent films including ARLINGTON ROAD and HOLY SMOKE.

Also featured on the SECRETARY soundtrack are two songs, Leonard Cohen’s “I’m Your Man” and Lizzie West’s “Chariots Rise”.

The Lion’s Gate Records release SECRETARY– Music from the Motion Picture will be in stores on October 8, 2002. The Lion’s Gate Films release SECRETARY starring James Spader, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Lesley Ann Warren is currently showing in New York and LA, and will be opening wider throughout October.
