This is good news and all, but the streak is broken; Donner has hired a composer (other than Kamen) more than once. Y'know, Alan Silvestri has never scored a Donner film...

Truth is, Donner's worked with several different composers:Assassins - Mark Mancina (though after Michael Kamen had to leave the project for whatever reason- and his composition, the Day of the Dead, is still in the film's last 40 mins.)
The Omen - Jerry Goldsmith, in fact, Goldsmith was Donner's first choice for Superman.
Conspiracy Theory - Carter Burwell (I wouldn't have picked him, the score turned out to be dull- thank god the movie was good).
The Toy - Patrick Williams
Maverick - Randy Newman (brilliant Western Comedy music)
Radio Flyer - Hans Zimmer
Scrooged - Danny Elfman
Ladyhawke - Andrew Powell
Inside Moves (1980) - John BarrySo, to judge Donner's choice of composer by looking only at the Lethal Weapon series really doesn't reflect the variety he at least tries to put in his career by working with as many different people as he can.
Incidentally, Goldsmith for Timeline is inspired. Goldsmith has as much a relationship with Crichton as he does with Donner- this is a match made in movie heaven.
Though its true Silvestri hasn't done a Donner film- that's a really good call, and who knows what the future holds?

Oh, boy! Oh, boy! Oh, boy!
That is gonna be great! Who else here expects a full-on orchestral onslaught, with moments of FIRST KNIGHT, LIONHEART and 13TH WARRIOR for the medieval sections and the HOLLOW MAN-type science scoring for the early sections of the film? Well, at least Goldsmith is working with a legitimately talented director who can pull the best out of Jerry. And a director who is not afraid of big music. It will be a great one!

PeteM,I wish I could agree with you, but I owned the score for about a year and really didn't like most of it- I did like the main theme a lot, though- altogether kooky like the Jerry character- but I honestly felt it was a film better scored less darkly than it was. But that's me.
However, you get 10 different composers to score a film, they will score 10 different ways. Par for course, I guess.

I'd say he has MORE a relationship with Crichton. They are long-time frineds and whenever possible Cricton has enlisted the services of Goldsmith. This is fantastic news but somehow I knew it was going to be Goldsmith all along. I hope it is recorded in Europe.posted 08-30-2002 12:53 PM PT (US)

It's not a surprising news, but a welcome one. I hope he doesn't retread his Mummy/13th Warrior/Hollow Man material and actually come up with something "fitting" with the story. But then, it's the producers that ultimately decide what the score will be like

Widescreen: Fair enough. I didn't care for the film at all, but Burwell's jazzy score? Oooooh, yeah! But each to his own & all that.

Go Jerry, Go! I'm hoping with Hadrian that the score isn't just a re-hash of 13th Warrior.
