Well, I'm considering putting together a CD compilation of Goldenthal's work, but am having trouble conceptualizing it. It might have to be 2CD's. Should I put his work together by suites or mix up tracks from his albums into a cohesive whole? Has anyone here put one such CD together? How was it tackled?

I once thought about it, but I think his scores are too simular in nature.

I did, but my burner broke; so that's that.

and I don't have copies of Demolition Man or The Butcher Boy.

1 CD was going to be film works; the other concert works.

You can buy a Goldenthal compilation in stores. It's called TITUS.

Are there a lot of concert works? Any particular recommendations?

The only one I've heard of is the Othello ballet (I think)

beside Othello, there are three other Goldenthal-concert-work-cds:

    Juan Darian: A Carnival Mass
    The Green Bird
Fire Water Paper: A Vietnam Oratorio

all three are highly recommended, although
green bird is probably the most "filmic"..

    greetings

Good point on the TITUS album being the ultimate Goldenthal comp. It is true, yet despite this fact that score is one of my favorite Goldenthal efforts. I've been in the mood lately to compile more fav's on CD. I recently finished a Pat Doyle compilation and one of Horner's music for animated films. A Goldenthal would be tough, so much great music to choose from and only 80 minutes per disc!

Well, I finally figured out a way to create a nice Goldenthal comp, which is creative and mostly representative of his differing styles. Since he is a concert composer mainly and uses many classical terms in his track titles (such as Andante, Lento, Agitato, etc), I decided this would be a good place to start. Select these musical terms which define a certain mood and then find the Goldenthal score cues which fit the description, then combine these cues to make a new work, a symphonic tone poem. I tried for different moods and styles, for instance making the INTERLUDE section center on his jazz styles while the MAESTOSO section is all big brass and thick textures. So, this is what I came up with:

    I: LARGO (11:14) -
    "Golden Gate" from Golden Gate
"Madeleine's Lament" from Interview with a Vampire
    "Funeral/Coda" from Michael Collins

    II: MOLTO VIVACE (5:42) -
    "Event Entry" from Sphere
"Fire and Arms" from Michael Collins
"Obligatory Car Chase" from Demolition Man

    III: MAESTOSO (10:07) -
"The Spirits Within" from Final Fantasy
"Arrows of the Gods" from Titus
"Born to Darkness Part 1" from Interview with a Vampire
    "Zeus Cannon" from Final Fantasy

    IV: INTERLUDE (8:02) -
    "Swing Rave" from Titus
    "Bopathonix Hex" from Golden Gate
"Mr. E's Dance Card" from Batman Forever

    V: MISTERIOSO (9:27) -
    "The Gift" from Sphere
    "Sphere Discovery" from Sphere
"The Pull of Red" from In Dreams
    "Appellatron" from In Dreams

    VI: ALLEGRO AGITATO (8:07) -
"Abduction & Absolution" from Interview with a Vampire
"Action, Guns, Fun" from Demolition Man
    "Machine Waltz" from Demolition Man

VII: ADAGIO (8:32) - "Finale" from Titus

    Any comments?

    Love your idea. Great CD.

I know you can't please everyone, but the Adagio from Alien3 is sorely missed....

I completely agree with you. ALIEN 3 is one my favorite Goldenthal scores, truly excellent, but just prior to this disc I made a compilation focusing on the ALIEN series. I included standout tracks from all four films (well, there aren't that many from the the fourth one) and so I refrained from duplicating the ALIEN 3 tracks on this Goldenthal compilation. That disc ends with the "Adagio" from ALIEN 3, a marvelous piece of music.

Dude...you need BUTCHER BOY. That is one of my Goldenthal faves. It is a wonderfully quirky score that is very unlike the stuff he is known for. Also...no PET SEMETARY?! For shame. I will say good day to you now!
