I recently saw Spartacus and noticed how great a score it has. I have the 2001 regected score but that's it. What else should I seek out from Mr. North?Jz

Cleopatra, The Misfits, Sound & THe Fury, Streetcar Named Desire, Dragonslayer are my faves beyond the 2001 and Spartacus scores. I am sure JJ can guide you better than I.

Warner/Elektra/Nonesuch issued a North album in their short-lived film music series. It has Eric Stern conducting the London Symphony. Selections can be somewhat questionable (were the best cues chosen?) but overall the album is very good, and presents various aspects of North's scoring.

Dinko, yes, that CD is a must. And is especially good to begin with. I suggest you start with that and Cleopatra, A Streetcar Named Desire, Dragonslayer (if you dig atonality), Viva Zapata.... well pretty much everything with his name on it is worth having, he's always very good.

Support Varese and get all their re-recordings, Cleopatra (an important score, even if the movie blows chunks), The Long Hot Summer/ Sanctuary (I like Sanctuary more), and by golly start bangng the drum for releases of The Shoes of the Fisherman -- and most of all -- an expanded Spartacus!!!!!!!!!!!!!Prometheus has a Club CD of Bite the Bullet, which is a very fine score (even if my CD is scratched), and also Africa, which is a very modern, dry piece. I like Africa, but most people would probably NOT.
We need a re-release of Dragonslayer in the worst way.
