Not bad. I heard an audio clip of "Good Morning Baltimore". It's nice to see that Marc Shaiman is still working and I look forward to his return to film scoring (should that day ever come).

I've spoken with Marc and chastised him about his absence in the film music world. He told me he supposes he'll have to score something soon. The HAIRSPRAY musical is right down his alley, and I think he prefers projects like that to film scoring. But you gotta pay the rent.

A guy who can do such amazing work arranging South Park songs for a movie is born to work on musicals. I remember wondering if her had ever done such projects after hearing "La Resistance Medley".

Was that the last film he was involved in?

And while we're discussing the man, which do you think are his best and most representative scores?
It's hard to mention one since they're all so diverse - City Slickers and American President can hardly be compared on the same level... they're both great in their own way (IMO)

I am extremely fond of Addams Family and Addams Family Values.

I would also recommend Ghosts of the Mississippi.

Marc got his start as Bette Midler's song arranger, so his background is really more musical-theater / songs than film scoring.

He has two scores out that I think are overlooked or underrated.
61* has two powerful, melodic themes that are gorgeous.
Sleepless in Seattle isn’t long, but his original music is wonderful. He has
a great bouncy main theme. It always amazes me when he takes his main theme
and dovetails it so perfectly into the “An Affair To Remember” theme by
Friedhofer. Wonderful combination of themes with great orchestration.

Also, both City Slickers compositions are great fun.

I have always been a big-time Shaiman supporter. I have even had the pleasure of speaking to the man on a couple of occasions. Not only does he write EXCELLENT music, he is VERY down to earth and extremely friendly. I just wish that other composers would take to their fans as well as him (cough cough GOLDSMITH cough cough...bottle cap collectors...cough cough).

I had no intention on ever wanting to hear any of Hairspray until I heard that Marc was writing the music. Then I HAD to get it.

I HAVE NOT TURNED IT OFF SINCE I GOT IT.

It is GREAT. It reminds me A LOT of "Grease" and in some parts the "First Wives Club" version of "You Don't Own Me" (Particularly the track titled "I'm a Big Girl Now").

I really like his use of instrumentation, especially the heart-pounding drums and other percussions.

I wish I had a list of the songs he wrote for Bette, cause I would really like to complete my collection of his music. He has always been in my top 3 favorite composers. Even above Elfman and Poledouris!

My fav. score of his is "Simon Birch". Great, wonderfull, powerfull, touching........ are some of to descriptions I think of when I think of that movie.

But, yeah, Hairspray is EXCELLENT. If you enjoy Shaiman's work, you'll like the show.

PS. I liked it so much, I bought a ticket, just for myself, for Dec 17! Can't wait! It will definately be worth the $100!!!

It also reminds me a lot of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Probably because of the whole 1950's do-wop influences.

    Love it!

Marc Shaiman's always been one of my favorite comedy composers. I've never truly embraced his dramatic stuff, which is not to say that "A Few Good Men" or "Ghosts of Mississippi" are bad scores.

My favorite of his would have to be "The First Wives Club." That CD is played at least once a week, especially "The Big Break-In."

I had known his background with song arranging before. I always enjoyed seeing him have a buttload of fun on "Saturday Night Live" with the Sweeney Sisters. Now with "South Park" and "Hairspray," this man is getting the recognition he deserves.

Let's not forget his role as the piano player for "The Man I Love" in HOT SHOTS!
