Okay, this was inspired by the Battle Angel topic, but given the nature and quality of the series, who could direct this, and who could score this well? I don't even have any ideas so....everyone is considered.
Given that, I have no faith in Spielberg or Williams nor Goldsmith.

Jason's review of the series' DVD box set should clue you in as to what NGE is.

I saw parts of the series on TV. As far as I remember, it was mostly crapy MIDI cues that were used and re-used and re-re-used...

I have the CDs and they are far from Midi quality. Everything is Orchestral. There are ambient synthesizer cues but most appropriate for the scene it accompanies....[Message edited by HadrianD on 08-18-2002]

There are like 2 CDs of original music on it. Though some of the cues were used as library cues, like Angel Attack 1,2,3

Actually they came out with about 12 different CD's (!) for the show. Most of the music found on those cd's are identical to each other save a cue or version of a song (They have a cd with 14 renditions of Frank Sinatra's Fly me to the Moon)If you wanted to pick any one of those, my recommendation is End of Evangelion. The CD is based on the finale to the series which was shown in theatres across Japan. It has an incredible climax and a very heartfelt and tragic song (don't remember the name at this moment).
Obviously, tastes differ. If you haven't seen the series I recommend you find a few cues online to orient yourself with the music.

I had 3 version of the cue you're talking about. Thanatos, or something similar to that. 12 cds...Um, you know that atleast the first 2 CDs contained music originally tracked into the show. The rest were mostly "inspired by" comps. There were at least 10 version of the song "Fly Me To The Moon".
