I've little knowledge of Waxman; will this score be worth getting?

I suggest you get educated. Waxman was a fantastic composer and anything by him is worth getting.

Criterion just issued this film on DVD with isolated score (with sound effects) if you want an idea of what you'll be hearing.

Just two problems with that - first, I don't have a DVD player, and second, I don't have a DVD player. Now I know that technically that's only one problem, but I thought it was such a big one it was worth mentioning twice....

**** , the first 2 tracks appeared on the In Sessions CD as a sort of sneak preview.

    good stuff.

The movie's been on Encore recently as well, and the score is fantastic, what I've heard of it.

I loved the cover art on this. The Rebecca score is ok. The best cues are in the Gerhardt suite, the rest tends to just sit there. I would have preferred a complete Suspicion since the existing suite doesn't do it justice. With McNeely conducting this could be a hit or miss but for certain it'll be better than the version Adriano conducted.

Okay. I did just that - in fact I played the whole Gerhardt CD, and I think it's wonderful. Looking back, I've an idea that my impression of Waxman has been formed by a re-recording of music for REAR WINDOW, which I really didn't like. Hopefully that was the exception. A PLACE IN THE SUN in particular I thought was terrific.

I also have Volume 3 of the Varese "Legends of Hollywood" series of Waxman re-recordings; I shall give that another listen sometime.

My whining and bitching self picks this:

    quote:
    From Varèse Sarabande:
New 20-bit digital recording, produced in cooperation with the composer’s family, sheds new light on the richly detailed orchestration and brings back to glorious life a genuine 20th Century musical masterpiece.

    and declares that:
Note to Varèse: 20-bit is old news. Move on.

Just for the fun of saying something, not because I care.

It can't possibly be worse than the Adriano version on Marco Polo. Too bad Morgan/Stromberg didn't get to do this important title.
