FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 30, 2002

HOLLYWOOD RECORDS TO RELEASE "SIGNS" SOUNDTRACK
FROM UPCOMING MEL GIBSON SUMMER THRILLER

Adding some chills to this summer's torrid box office pace, Hollywood Records is set to release an album of music by noted film composer James Newton Howard, from the highly-anticipated screen thriller "Signs." “Signs,” a new film written and directed by M. Night Shymalan (“The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable") stars Mel Gibson. The Hollywood Records soundtrack album arrives in stores July 30th, while the film opens nationwide on August 2.

Set in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, "Signs" centers on the disturbing appearance of an intricate 500-foot-long pattern of circles and lines cut into one farm family's crops. Mel Gibson stars as Graham Hess, the family patriarch who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the signs. Joaquin Phoenix plays Merrill Hess, Graham's brother and a former minor league baseball player. As Graham further probes the mystery, his life and the lives of his family members are forever altered.

James Newton Howard re-teams with writer-director M. Night Shyamalan on Signs after having scored "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable." Howard has composed music for more than 65 feature films and earned five Academy Award® nominations. Among his most celebrated credits are the Oscar® nominated scores for "The Fugitive," "The Prince of Tides" and "My Best Friend's Wedding." He has also written the Oscar®-nominated songs "Look What Love has Done" (from "Junior") and "For the First Time" (from "One Fine Day"). Other films he has scored include "Snow Falling on Cedars," "The Devil's Advocate," "Liar, Liar," "Primal Fear," "Restoration," "Falling Down," "Dave," "Alive," "Glengarry Glen Ross," "The Man in the Moon," "Grand Canyon," "My Girl," "Pretty Woman," and "Flatliners." He is currently scoring "Treasure Planet," his third feature film for Walt Disney Feature Animation, following his scores for "Dinosaur" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire."

Touchstone Pictures' "Signs" is written and directed by Oscar® nominee M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable"). The producers are Shyamalan, Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer. The executive producer is Kathleen Kennedy. The stars are Academy Award®-winner Mel Gibson ("Braveheart," "What Women Want") and Academy Award®-nominee Joaquin Phoenix ("Gladiator"). The supporting cast includes Tony Award-winner Cherry Jones ("Erin Brockovich," "Cradle Will Rock"), Rory Culkin ("You Can Count On Me"), newcomer Abigail Breslin, and Patricia Kalember ("thirtysomething"). The film is distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution.
