As usual, my collection over the past five months has been added to by CDs we get at work. Nothing beats free CDs.

So this month, it's only James Newton Howard's score to M. Night Shymalan's Signs.

Maybe I'll get Road to Perdition if the bank account permits.

I bought a number of scores but sadly, not one of them got 5 stars from me. Most were just adequate (4 stars):

Basil Poledouris: Quigley Down Under, Lonesome Dove, Hot Shots! Part Deux
    Don Davis: Warriors of Virtue
    Joel McNeely: Iron Will
John Williams: Superman (2 CD), Jurassic Park

Only Hunt for Red October got ****1/2. The other scores will hopefully grow on me or I'll probably sell them in eBay one year from now.

You're sitting on a gold mine of melodies, and you'd be foolish to sell any of them, particularly "Hot Shots! Part Deux". This is Basil's most underrated score and he manages to pack a lot of enjoyment into a half hour CD. Personally, I give it five stars.

BTW, I sent away for a Varese Club release today. When it arrives, I'll tell you which one.

Huh? I thought the official album release contained almost all of the score already. I didn't notice much missing when I watched the film a few months ago.

I have no idea. Thought i remembered reading that it did. If someone could send me the tracklitings and times for the official release, i can get down to buisness tonight and check. It just so happens i have a copy of it on VHS. One of the years i will get a DVD player when some kind of fu(k!ng standard is set so they all play all DVD and their regins and whatnot so i don't have to worry if i got the right version or not.
Send the TZ: TM info to: justinboggan@hotmail.com

Well right off the bat the expanded has about 3 or 4mins not on the official comparing the trackliting. Plus 3 different overture versions. And i think another boot has something else missing. Damn, this sounds like a job for..... somebody else.

DVD *is* standardized. The region system was deliberately introduced so we here in Europe don't buy the DVDs instead of going to the theatres (because by the time the movies arrive in local theatres, many of the US DVDs are already out), and because the European (or other region's) distributors aren't always the same as those in the US, so they don't want us to buy the US discs. So waiting for them to drop that system is futile. And besides, most players can be tweaked so they play all region codes anyway.

    Just got:

    • Heartbeeps (John Williams)
    • The Fury, Deluxe Edition (John Williams)

Fury sounds wonderful! Very minor complaints are the design of the actual CDs (the Varese bird/ink blot/whatever - how original; and they didn't even label the CDs) and the fact that they still have their liner notes running over the whole booklet pages instead of putting them in two columns or whatever; it's hard to read text that's so wide, particularly with the font they use.

But hey - the music's there!

    NP: The Fury (re-recording)

Nothing yet. Just wanted to second Marian's recommendation of "Gremlins 2". It's a terrific comedy score, a genre that Goldsmith doesn't work in quite as much as others. "Pot Luck" is a highlight for me as well, and who doesn't love that "Rambo" reference in track eight, "Keep it Quiet"?

BTW, that Varese Club release is currently shipping. It's from a film about this guy who did some things. You know the one, right?
