Maurice Jarre is very much alive!
Worth while Jarre scores Mad Max III, Shadow of the Wolf, A Walk in the Clouds, I dreamed of Africa, Sunshine, Tai-Pan, Enemy Mines, Almost an Angel, Lion of the Desert.

Ya bastard, hope you were kiddin'!

Anyway, I can recommend good Jarre titles day and night here for ya, since I haven't met one I don't like(yes, even the synth stuff....sorry, I grew up on it, sue me!). Instead of boring you all to death, I'll just name one must have:

Shadow of the Wolf (aka Enemy Mine 2)
It's grand symphonic/choral stuff, alternating with electronic ensemble, and has a theme you will NEVER get out of your head.....it's playing in mine right now, just thinking of it.
The finale is gigantic, choral/orchestral stuff, like unreleased music we haven't heard from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Milan Records dug it so much they took the 'flying man' image from this ridiculous film and used it as their logo!

Anyway, if you can find it or get a copy....make it so

    Best,
    Sean

Totally agreed with Sean here... Shadow Of The Wolf is terrific. I had completely written the score off until I watched this turkey on cable one day. Once I heard the main theme, I was hooked.

You got it Mike...this movie explores new lows of laughability.....

For the nay sayers, I've decided to put together a Jarre 101 disc. Will post track list when it's done(and I'll be sure to add a cue from THE BRIDE as well).

    Bonjour,
    Sean

Perhaps you can knock Jarre for some of his missteps and clumsy efforts, but he sounds like no one else, and no one sound like him, and that gets him a very high mark in my books.

Except for Alan Menken. WHAT??? you say. Well...listen to "Topsy Turvy" in his "Hunchback of Notre Dame" score and you'll see what I mean. If that isn't Maurice Jarre-like, I'll let myself be PeterK's punching bag again.

    Sorry Shaun,

Reflex rejoinder. I have read so many Jarre smackdowns that I am maybe a little defensive. It amazes me how one of the few composers still working from the Golden Age can be ignored.

I am not overly fond of his synth stuff (Although I give him credit for trying to vary his musical tools to include some new tricks) but everyone forgave Jerry Goldsmith for some of regrettable forays into synths, but for Jarre? Where's the love, baby? Where's the love?

Needless to say, I ordered The Bride, The Virgin Queen and Love is a Many Splendored Thing from Varese. These are the first club releases I have gotten but I will try to get the rest.

    Another old crotch says:

SAND PEBBLES - one of the very best Goldsmiths ever. No release has done it justice up to now.

THE FURY - great JW. Will be interesting to hear how the two versions compare. Still no complaints with the old re-recording though (unlike PEBBLES)

THE BRIDE - don't know it. Have been sarcastic about Maurice Jarre in the past, but his best stuff is really good. Won't say no if it's a present.

ROMANCING THE STONE - I like Silvestri, but isn't this sort of dee-I-ess-see-oh? Excuse my ignorance while you all tell me that it has a "subtle backbeat". Again, might be great, I don't know. Another present I'd keep.

Wow, a bunch a new Club titles. That reminds me: I should get "Joe vs. The Volcano".

Not a damn one of the most recent titles strikes me as a must get.

The Sand Pebbles - Never seen the film, and if not having this disc is crazy, then call me Napoleon! I don't really believe in buying soundtracks to films I haven't seen. I guess this is why my collection doesn't crack the 1000 mark. I might buy a CD under these conditions on occasion - because I like the composer - but usually, no.

The Fury - Haven't seen this film either.

The Bride - Say what you will about me, but (outside of the "Topaz" main title on a Hitchcock compilation), I don't own a single Jarre score, and I don't know where to start (if at all). BTW, never seen the film.

Romancing the Stone - Hmmm. Alan Silvestri score...big 1980s hit...spawned moderately entertaining follow-up. It's gotta be "Back to the Future"! No. "Predator"! No. "Delta Force"? (just kidding). What the hell? "Romancing the Stone"? Truth be told, I've only heard the end title, and while catchy, it's not incentive enough to get the whole CD, IMO.

Also, as a member of the "'young' audience", I resent that "five-disc 'Mom and Dad Save the World'" very much. First, the OOP CD suits me just fine. Also, I consider "Small Soldiers" to be one of Goldsmith's finest works, period. That score is equally deserving of a deluxe edition.

Man...you don't know what you're missing if you think "Small Soldiers" is one of Goldsmith's finest works. Your loss and someone else's gain because they'll get the CD.

Score CDs for movies I haven't seen are always being issued. It is no big deal to rent the DVD or video to find out if the score is worth buying. And SAND PEBBLES is not only an outstanding score, it is a magnificent movie with an Oscar nominated performance by Steve McQueen. Truly worth renting.

I have a hell of a lot of CDs for films I've not seen. I've just ordered ENOUGH, BABY BOY and K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER. None of these have even been released in the UK yet, but the first two are David Arnold, and that's good enough for me...

NP: ARMY OF DARKNESS (Joseph Lo Duca), which I have seen.

I received copies of the new Club titles today. I've only had time to listen to The Fury so far and it is magnificent... The album rerecording has been remastered and I was totally floored by how much better it sounds. The original film tracks also sound fantastic. I am so happy to finally be able to hear the original film tracks away from the film...

It looks like Varese has now sold out of the 1000 copies of Jarre's The Bride.
