Go See K-19!!! One of the best films I've seen in awhile. Kathryn Bigelow gets the good star in the class. The ads aren't fibbin' !!! This is indeed one of Harrison Ford's best performances to date (and you all thought I hated the man based on previous thread history) and Liam Neeson's. The film is totally not what I expected. Much, much, much different and better for it.I didn't have much hope for the score in the beginning of the film, but eventually Badelt delivers...and generously. I'll pick this one up very soon.
Sorry if this steps on the toes of previous praising threads for this movie, but having just come back from it, I am EXCITED!!! Perfect direction. Flawless in my eyes. I felt like a crewmember on that sub. That's pretty damn good when you can suck people into your film like that, that they actually feel like a part of it. It reminded me of how I felt when I saw DAS BOOT for the first time (which, by the way, is a much different film with a different feel. So don't fear this factor.)
Kudos again, Mrs. Bigelow!

Hell ya!My only bitch is that the film is like wall to wall music.
In a film like this, sometimes slience is best...

I agree completely with both of you, Brian especially for your critique of the constant music. While the soundtrack was indeed a great work, the slow theme was overused in that it appeared just about every time there was a slow down, especially near the end, resulting in a less dramatic musical effect.

Hey, does anyone know if the music when K19 breaks through the ice is on the CD? There was a really cool bit as the crew sets up a brace and finally gets it in place that sounded a lot like the big heroic theme from Gladiator. Awesome score! None of the stores here in Canada are carrying it yet, HMV can't even order it! grrrrrrrrrr......

Sean, amazon.ca recently opened a more Canadian store, as opposed to linking to their US site whenever you typed the Canadian URL. They have it for sale.
As for the rest...
Movie: good. Better than most I have recently seen. But it was a typical disaster movie, with its ups and downs.
I had the advantage (never thought this would be an advantage) of seeing the movie dubbed in French, so I was not bothered by "russian accents". An idea which is moronic at best (if that's the way the English version is) ; Ruskies speaking to each other in English with accents on their own sub in a crisis situation where language and clear understanding is of primary importance.Badelt's score: pretty good. Actually sounded Russian.
Wonder who he stole it from.
Will be getting this CD as soon as can afford it. Hope the part where they play football on the ice is on the CD.posted 07-31-2002 07:19 AM PT (US)

Wonder who he stole it from.Well, that's rather rude.... I interviewed Klaus, and he explains the genesis of the Russian sound in his score. Look for the interview this weekend.

Does Badelt explain anything about the relationship between CD & movie?I saw the flick yesterday and thought the movie often had very memorable musical moments with very little forgettable underscore noise.
But it seems that all the K-19 CD reviews I read mention that there is a lot of filler music on the CD, and very few memorable moments which are lost between the noise.

I like this score more than I do Time Machine because of the cohesiveness throughout the album. If you like the main theme and you love repeated playing (with variations and variations) then you'll like this. There aren't that significant amount of musical filler throughout the running time. There are long tracks but like Crimson Tide, highlights are abound within those tracks. Listen to it as a whole because it's only then that the album will be worthwhile. Though, there are a few track that can totally stand on its own within future compilations...
I'm really looking forward to the interview

Saw the film last night...well crafted in all respects, solidly acted, and a fine score to boot.Too bad it's not experiencing much success at the box office.

K-19 which was partially produced by National Geographic was a film that was documentary-ish because of its association with the magazine. I expected it to stay true to the facts and historical records of the ship and events. Thus, I was not dissappointed at the film at all, a rather well crafted suspense that does not rely on incoming torpedoes or skirmishes but rather on the people who's very lives you depend yours upon. The suspense of the movie came from watching how far authority stretched during times of crisis.I found Klaus's score rather unmemorable but in a good way. The music did not overshadow the film, so theyre weren't any overblown moments where the music suddenly took over the story. If it was Kalus's idea or the directors to keep the score from overshadowing the scenes, it worked. The movie would then become akward with Basils or Zimmers score.
