Dreadful. Awful. Terrible. Best thing about it is the score which ain't nothing to get worked up about.

Dan,I've learned a long time ago not to rely on you "coasters" (west). You're just too loose with the morals and values that us "everyday citizens" have here in the heart of the country.

And it's insidious. I mean, look at Jeron now. Such a nice "normal" guy, now forever corrupted by sin.

I was thoroughly disappointed with this film, even though I was going in only expecting to see a fun, brainless action pic.
I thought it was lacking in almost every area. One thing almost completely absent, that I think the film could have greatly benefited from was a little sense of humor.I felt the film was almost taking itself too seriously. That was one of the major problems I had with the it.But I must praise director Rob Bowman and cinematographer Adrian Biddle for choosing to shoot the film in scope to get that wonderful look that you can only get when utilizing that anamorphic widescreen photography, something alot of filmmakers these days have forgotten how to do.Shearmur's score was pretty good and worked really well in the film, but I don't know how well it would function as an album.

Dude,
I'm not from LA. I'm from Boston. And I will NEVER be a "west coaster". So don't be talkin' to me about loose morals.

LOL! Yeah, Boston, that lovely corner of the country where even the strongest spiritual leaders of morality have loose morals.Of course, Dan's not "part of that group," so all is well.
By the way, no one is from L.A. Absolutely no one.
Are there any good reviews of Shearmur's score out there? What does the Reporter have to say? Variety? I missed it....

I'm from Anaheim...which is worse than being from LA.
Shearmur's score really didn't leave an impression on me in the film, but I will gladly buy it once it hits the used bins. (Maybe even for more than 99 cents)

Taken from that "other" Thread:I am astounded that anyone can recommend this movie except as some form of insidious revenge. This is quite simply one of the worst examples of effect over story that I have ever seen. The script has so many holes in it makes Star Trek look like the best thought out Sci-Fi around.
First, Why do none of these Dragons appear in the fossil record? They supposedly killed the dinosaurs so they were concurrent with them. There should be some record of them.
Second, Nuking them didn’t work but unloading a shotgun at one gets its attention? Ridiculous.
Third, how could such a ridiculous life form evolve? It eats ashes? It can hibernate for millennia and spring back to life? Only one male for a million females? The potential for genetic inbreeding is appalling.
Fourth, Civilization is destroyed. Lucikly we still have electricity, running water and plenty of gasoline.
Fifth, the score, while nothing special at all, is so much better than the film playing above it that it makes Shearmur seem like a godlike combination of Williams and Goldsmith. That’s how awful this film is
My advice is to save your money, wait for the DVD, rent it and just watch the effects sequences as they are the ONLY reason to bother with this wretched piece of drek. I would rather watch a bad German movie dubbed into Japanese with Spanish subtitles, it would make more sense.
No, wait. Don’t rent this at all. You can use the extra time for something useful like driving spikes into your temples. It will hurt less.

Ruger, thanks. I don't really plan on seeing the film any time soon.... but I do like Shearmur, always have. I will check out the score, and even give 1500 cents for it (come on Bond65, don't show us how immoral you are for buying music for 99 cents, you damned southern Califorknian!).I guess I'm not getting the reaction about the music I'm looking for. Here's another angle:
How does Reign of Fire stand up to Count of Monte Cristo? Cristo is a fantastic score... one of the better ones written this year.

I admit to kind of liking parts of this movie, thus making it a semi guilty pleasure. I
enjoyed the first half because of the premise, the cinematography, the location and some of
the characters. Sort of like watching Mad Max and his buddies looking for dragons.
The first time some characters go the London, the plot collapses under holes large enough
to drive 50 Mack Dragons through. Too bad, because with some rewriting, I think this
could be cult hit.I’ve already expressed my disdain for AOTC. Reign of Fire still sported better dialogue
and acting than AOTC. (so stone me.) I certainly never took a nap during Reign of Fire.
(Of course, its visuals were no match for AOTC.)The score had strong percussive elements. I like the military music that often reminded
me of Aliens. At times it was mixed too loud and was overbearing. No really clear
themes, but I thought it was well suited to the visuals and certainly heightened the tension.
It would be hard to compare it to The Count of MC because the movies and the purpose
of the music are so vastly different. RF was a solid action score but not thematic like
The Count of MC.It’s a light popcorn movie that could have been a lot better but still provided some
entertainment. My favorite dragon is still Pete’s.

Unfrortunately, the most interesting part of this movie, the skydiving dragon wranglers, was left behind which would have made for a much more interesting movie if they revolved the plot around this method for battling dragons...sort of like a DINOTOPIA did with its Skyriders.

it's like what I said about Attack of the Clones.you know going in that it won't be Citizen Kane, and so enjoy it on that level.
fun movie; stupid of course, but still fun.
Shearmur wrote my kind of score, man. Big and brassy. Not too sure it'd hold up well on album, but I'd like to get it one of these days anyway.
and what the HELL with tacking on goofy rock songs on to the end credits out of nowhere?
Unless Shearmur wrote it, what an insult to HIM.

Well, I did pick up the album and have enjoyed what I heard so far. Edward Shearmur was a great discovery this year, after hearing his wonderful score for Count of Monte Cristo. I then picked up Wings of the Dove and The Governess and thoroughly enjoyed the range he diplayed musically. Reign of Fire is not the thematic, lyrical score that these previous scores are, but no less enjoyable. It's quite an intense listen, full of dissonance and high energy. There is a mournful, dirge-like theme but it is the action that takes the lead and for the most part is well-composed and structured.
