Especially the score. It's that perfect mix of "American Beauty" quirkiness with "Shawshank Redemption" elegance. Every note had a reason; every cue made me want to stand up in the theater and scream "Yes!"

I know we've talked about this CD before, and I hope that the best cues are there...which in hindsight would be all of them!

    Jeffy,

The film was amazing - certainly the best of the year so far. Excellent work all around.

Newman's score is very well represented on the album, and I can't think of any cue in the film that I felt was "lacking" representation.

I don't see how you could have a good film with the trailers boasting that:

"Every father is a hero to his son"

What a bunch of Tom Wanks crap!

    Score sounded ok, though.

My dad is my hero! Got a problem with that?

As for the score... Road to Perdition is one of the best scores of the year. As mentioned in earlier posts the score is a mix between American Beauty and Shawshank... but I hear more influences from THE HORSE WHISPERER, especially in the first track. I also hear Horner's The Devil's Own influences in Newman score. While not an outright rip the first track's orchestrations sound similar to Horner's main theme from The Devil's Own.

    My two cents,

    -Erik-

Norman Rockwell to the rescue! Movies like these are made to be loathed.

I am very excited for the film. Sam Mendes, Conrad Hall, David Self, Thomas Newman, and Jill Bilcock. With a crew like that, the film is going to rock!

Yeah, I'm sure that was the thinking behind making this film. "Let's make it so that people can loathe it!"

Dude, it's just a movie. It's not gonna affect world events, or even change your life. It's just a film.

Yes, it does rock. In my own, personal opinion, of course. And some people (like SPQR) might loathe the film. And that's just fine for them - they aren't being forced to see it....

    Dan,

Can I be forced to see it? I want to anyways, but if I'm forced to (with a sexy young lady who shall remain nameless)....

No problemo here, Erik. If you read my post again you'll notice that the key word is "Every...." So, that's a far cry from the truth because not "Every father" is a hero; far from it, man.

Tom Wanks is a suck. All he ever does are those pretentious American hero films.

I wouldn't call his role here heroic.

Don't know if this was posted earlier or not, but for those interested in the score but want to hear it before buying it, you can go to www.roadtoperdition.com and listen to every track in it's entirety through what appears to be some sort of flash streaming. (It's actually sounds pretty good, good quality.) So far, I would have to say that Newman has another great score to add to his numerous excellent previous scores.

We should know better that every time something with "Americana" in it is mentioned, sean will chime in with his typical tired anti-U.S. statements.

I'm glad that Erik considers his father his hero. I wish more kids in the world were that fortunate or could say that as well.

    American hero, huh?

Since when were cold blooded killers considered heroes in today's society? Sam Mendes said in an interview that he did absolutely everything possible to make the Tom Hanks character morally ambiguous, going so far as to remove any scene which justified Hanks' unfortunate occupation. A hero this guy's not.

Just got back from the movie. Outstanding on every level. Nice to see Big Hollywood treating audiences like intelligent adults. Also nice to see Tommy Boy stretching his range--good stuff. Liked the score, but liked how it was used in the film more--especially that one scene in the rain (if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about). Oh wow...that scene gave me chills.
