As the saying goes (kinda) is another's treasure. I stumbled into a smorgasboard o'stuff today - most of it I had, but it was someone's entire promo/oscar cd collection. A lot of repeats, too, but some gems (Bound for 3 bucks? how can u beat it???). Also, tons of crap I already paid a lot for - like the FOG for 8 bucks after i bought it for maybe 40...argh! But I was able to pick up five or six things, most of which I've never seen before, so that was pretty sweet. Gotta love good days like this that pay off all my poking around various CD stores.

Just felt like sharin'. Peace out...

    For those in LA:

This was at Moby Disk on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City, CA.

Someone LITERALLY got rid of a whole bunch of WB/Columbia stuff - like nine copies of a promo for Ottman's APT PUPIL and Zimmer's AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

I also got CUTTHROAT ISLAND for 8 bucks (after just seeing it for 25 last week!) and DREAMSCAPE by Jarre for 9 bucks.

Pretty sweet, I must say. If ya's got the time, go there. Tell 'em I sent ya...well don't, they don't know me there. Nevermind! Just go! Peace.

Matt, gimme a call if you decide to go tomorrow. I might tag along, depending on what I've gotta get done.

I've gotten some great gems at that Moby Disc also. There's also a Moby Disc in Pasadena. Though I've never found as much there.

It's the Moby Disc in the Valley on Ventura Blvd.

The guy working there said the stuff'd come in Monday; this was Tuesday when I went.

At that point, they had (left):

APT PUPIL (many many copies; Oscar promo, I think 3 or 4.99, some were with covers, some without; those with were more expensive)

AS GOOD AS IT GETS (Oscar promo; several copies, 3.99 or 4.99)

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING (Oscar Promo; 1 or 2 copies, 2.99 - with cover - cheap!)

BOUND (I bought two; one w/cover, one w/out; i believe they had one more non-cover one for 2.99)

Several random John Scott things (Jacques Cousteau stuff, I believe) - probably good but all I know of scott is that van damme film LIONHEART and the sweet cut they threw on DIE HARD (From "man on fire" was it? I forget), but for those interested, there were at least 3 disks of this material.

Two copies of Varese's original FOG disk.

Bruce Rowland's LIGHTNING JACK score (the only thing I was tempted to buy and did not; b/c I hate that film and don't remember the score...it was 8.99 and I knew I'd never see it again, but...you can listen to stuff before buying, I was just lazy - and too stoked about the other stuff I'd gotten!)

CUTTHROAT ISLAND - Debney (one more copy; 8.99)

THE GREEN MILE (Oscar WB promo; no idea how much music, but it was I think 4.99)

LIBERTY HEIGHTS (Oscar WB promo; no idea how much music, also 4.99, lovely score I gotta tell ya if you don't have it)

THIN RED LINE (Oscar Fox Promo; 2.99...my disk is all scratched up, i almost bought this just to throw in the scratched up case to replace my disk, I love this score - i think it was the same as the disk though, no new stuff or extras or what have you)

PATCH ADAMS - Shaiman (several no-cover, no-frills Oscar promo copies of this, at least 3 for 3-4.99 i think)

ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS (R. Folk Promo, 2 copies of this, I believe 4.99-ish, don't quote me on the price but it was cheap)

I believe that's about it...I think there was one, maybe 2 more things, but they now escape me...I also picked up ROBOCOP for 4.99 down the block a bit at Second Spin the week before...which is a great buy, I've not seen the score for full price much anymore, much less 4.99 so had to pick it up.

    Hope this helps!!!

Mills...that was mighty fine of you to share. Many other collectors would have scooped up the lot and sold it on ebay.

I take my hat off to you...although the post itself depresses me.

Cliche to cliche....another man's crap....so close yet so far away.

    Cheers
    Rochelle

Only time I ever scoop anything up that I don't myself want or think I might like is when I know something is SO rare I'll never see it again...case in point, a weird-label promo for Trevor Jones' recent DINOTOPIA score. (More on that at the bottom)

I was at a Tower Records that was going out of biz and they had stuff like THREE FUGITIVES (which I've never seen again) for ten bucks and I picked that up, tho I've still never heard it/opened it up. I also have unopened promos for CAPTAIN RON, JACK FROST, and one more I forget. I've considered for a moment selling some of these things and others, but the only way I would is if it was someone I knew well or whatever...it's not that I don't "believe" in e-bay, but something about the undercutting of distributors and whatnot, it seems a bit greedy/not right. Hey: i've bought promos before at comic or horror conventions, only because i know i will NEVER have that music otherwise. Beyond that...my making money off of some Oscar promos certainly does not rank as uberevil (for me or anyone else) on the bad-o-meter, I don't think, but it's not exactly kosher either and I'd much rather help a fellow soundtrack junkie out and tip them off to something that could help their collection than make bucks off of them. But that is just I.

To be honest with you when I found this cache' of stuff, I literally wanted to buy it all and run out in the street handing it out to people going "this is really good, it's cheap, SOMEONE has to own this, they're practically GIVING this away, fer chrissakes!!!". This is when one must face the fact he/she is a score-geek -- I own John Ottman's APT PUPIL yet because there were about 8 copies of the Oscar promo I wanted to buy 'em anyway; it was like i was PISSED I already owned the album so I couldn't buy it again it was such a neat "find".

'Least this forum's here; nobody else would understand this. Even the counter guy was like "hey, glad you're happy" when I was telling him how extremely psyched I was to find stuff like DREAMSCAPE.

Two of the things I bought were total "I have to have it; it's cheap and I'll never see it again"-ers and so far one of them, John Beal's FUNHOUSE, is quite good. So that 2.99 paid off...
With regards to DINOTOPIA...it was 4.99 and I picked it up on a whim only because A) it was Trevor Jones, B) there was much discussion of it here about a month back when the miniseries aired (excuse me - megaseries, hooha) about it getting yanked from Varese's line-up, etc. I opened it up and gave it a listen after a week last night and it is AWESOME...hope they do release this score. How a score could be that operatic w/out being cheesy/tinny/tv-musicy is beyond me. I figured if i didn't like it much, someone'd want to own it but I'm definitely keeping it and, like I say, hope a regular release is forthcoming for everyone to enjoy.

As far as finding things in and around LA, anytime I find a gem I'll certainly post it, or a stockpile of stuff like in this particular case. Yes I know there's a lot of "competition" out there, but...hey, we're a community, right?

    Peace out.

NP: MINORITY REPORT - Williams (2nd half of track one is just....it's incredible)
