I'm hoping to pick up some great CDs during my months stay in Amsterdam. According to my 'Lonely Planet', there are a bunch of great stores where to find new or used rarer stuff.

Hope the hunting will be as enjoyable as my month in Barcellona last July...

I'm going to make an effort to invest in a few scores this month, even though I'm holding a thin rope when it comes to funds. I know I will get "8 1/2" by Nino Rota and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro/ 5 Fingers" by Bernard Herrmann (I caught Snows on FMC a few nights ago...excellent film, and breathtaking score) as well as some rarities (probably Obsession complete by Bernard and Fortunella by Nino).

I'm making a concentrated effort to buy next to nothing this month, personally
    Vacation time is looming

I just wanted to add, that if you can, GET Obsession by Herrmann Dylan, it's one of his great masterpieces.....cannot endorse that enough.

As far as new things go, my long standing order with Tower.com for Waxman's Legends of Hollywood Vol.1 actually shipped today, much to my surprise....thought it would never get confirmed, but sure enough, there are still copies out there!

    That's it for now,
    Sean

    In today:

Short Circuit (David Shire; ***1/2; as much as I've wanted to have this score - one of the first I noticed in a movie - I'm glad that it's never been officially released. It would never survive an album treatment longer than 23 minutes - the length of this CD-r)
    Galaxy Quest (David Newman; ****)

    Men In Black 2

Men in black 2 is good but the end of the score ends to quick.

    Arrived today.

    • Alfred Newman: Love Is A Many Splendored Thing.
Somewhat less interesting than what I expected. Soundtracks from the era have much crummier sound than classical music of the same period.

    • Edward Shearmur: The Count of Monte-Cristo.
As good as I remember from the movie. Nice to see someone still knows how to use an orchestra.

    PS: Thanks K!

Goldsmith's POTA score is awesome! It took me many listens before it finally sank in. Weird, yes...but weird in a good way. Too bad more people just don't love this score.

Have you seen the film? I didn't really know what to do with the score before I had seen it.

Oh, and if you haven't seen it yet, I hope you didn't read the booklet. Jeff Bond's liner notes spoiled the film for me.

Oh. You should have asked us. The Varse has 17 tracks from POTA plus a 16 minute suite from Escape from the POTA - which is far more accessible and helps a lot as long as you haven't accustomed to POTA yet.
