I`ve just been listening to Delerue`s great score for Joe vs. the Volcano and I have to say the track "The Storm & Rescue" has some of the best action-y music I`ve heard in ages. The section from 2:20-3:08 could come from any number of gothic superhero films, especially the middle bit (Batman, surprisingly comes to mind). This is especially surprising as it is coming from Delerue`s who I`ve normally associated with more subdued dramatic scores with "nice" themes. I remember his Salvador score having some thunderous stuff, especially in the end credits.
Any recommendations of similar nature?

Chouans! is a score everyone should seek out. Pretty damn rare, though.
the stuff you mention from JVV, as good as it is on it's own terms, is VERY Wagnerian in style. My personal favorite bit of that particular score is in that track however, and it's the bit when the oboe comes in. Wonderful.
Also, try the stuff from his reject for Something Wicked This Way Comes on the London Sessions CDs -- I forget which volume specifically.

I recommend Delerue's escape music for ESCAPE FROM SOBIBOR. Never released on CD but you can find the DVD at Walmart for around $7. You have to listen to all the screaming and machine-guns---but the music is fabulous and you'd never believe it's Delerue.

The very rare French 2-CD set LA REVOLUTION FRANCAISE I & II contains some good action tracks. So does the unreleased SWORD OF GIDEON.
