I think we have a bright new star shining upon us, with this very much gifted composer. Of course my favorite of them all is THE BALCONY SCENE from ROMEO AND JULIET. But I also love COME WHAT MAY from MOULIN ROUGE, though I am not sure if it is a compostion by Armstrong or a redo. Let me hear your thoughts!

    Best to you all

Armstrong was interesting to hear in R&J. But I never bothered to get the album. Not interesting enough.

He impressed me even more with Plunket and Macleane. Then in The Bone Collector.

But somehow, he's not what I would call a top composer. Much of his stuff sounds too much like his previous efforts. Stylistically.

Moulin Rouge was unimpressive. The Jet Li/Bridget Fonda flick (whatever the Dragon title was) was just about average.
And what I've heard of his non-filmmusic CDs isn't that interesting.

All of his stuff sounds like his string arrangements for Madonna.

Have to agree with Dinko here. P & M was great, but all his scores since sound like Best Laid Plans thematically and the rest of the music doesn`t rise above the level of wall-paper scoring

I have to agree with Phillip.
The Balcony Scene from R&J is very nice...a great love theme.

By the way...the Jet Li/Bridget Fonda flick is "Kiss of the Dragon"

Armstrong didn't compose the song "Come What May."

it is interesting to note that he indeed WAS a string arranger for Madonna at one point.

Going completely off topic, it's interesting to note how many film composers have also arranged strings and orchestras for various pop/jazz/rock acts.

Also interesting is how their arrangements are like their film music scores: always nice, pleasant and appropriate, yet rarely impeding upon and taking over the song itself.

Other than Armstrong, the names of William Ross, Johnny Mandel, Paul Buckmaster, Steve Bartek, Michael Gibbs, Don Davis, Lee Holdridge, and Jeremy Lubbock come to mind as string/orchestra arrangers.

I personally enjoy his scores. But I didn't really like his score to The Bone Collector all that much. Come What May was orchestrated and arranged by him according to the promo. As for his non-film-music stuff, it's not all that bad. A track called 'Rise' ended up as the main titles for The Negotiator. Pretty good composer in my eyes.
