If you like Zimmer styled music, buy both.

Black Hawk Down is not very melodic. It's a tough score to a tough movie. I really like it. It grew on me.

We Were Soldiers is a dramatic score. No hymns, no patriotic music. Nice score.

    How about neither?

We Were Soldiers would be my suggestion. It sounds less freaky. More traditional.

BHD, of the two, is what I would get, if I were into the Zimmer school more.

We Were Soldiers, fine movie as it is, is just a goofy score. The choral parts are the best. The Main Title is just plain goofy and inept.

How about neither and get Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron?

    NP: Les Miserbables (Basil Poledouris)

I already have Spirit. Anyways I got We Were Soldiers because the store didn't have BHD. Or others I wanted either.
