Am I missing the thread about this score? Why is nobody talking about this? I gave it one listen, and honestly, this is way better than the lame-ass Attack Of The Clones score.

    A few things:

1.) Where has THIS Shawn Murphy been? His recordings of late have all sounded as if his mother had come into his room in the middle of the night and mistakenly turned his treble controls all the way down instead of the volume, and five years later, he's finally realized it and corrected the problem (that used to happen to me all the time). This has high AND low end! Track 10 knocked me on my ass!

2.) Speaking of track 10, he once again dips into the "Ludlow's Demise" well for an action cue (this marks the third score in a row where he's used the exact music; it's turning into his U.S. Marshals), and there are some more Crouching Tiger moments in this cue and some others, but this is one of the most balls-out action cues I've heard from Williams in a long while. "Jango's Escape" was great Star Wars action music, but this is like Jaws 2, man!

3.) One of the tracks on here is TOTALLY inspired by Silvestri's Death Becomes Her, and although Williams makes it sound more like a "March Of The Villains," it's obvious that this was in the temp score. So, boo that.

4.) The theme, if you want to call it that, has a late 70s/early 80s Williams string sound, which is a very, very good thing. You'll know when you hear it.

Anyway, enough of my yappin', what do YOU guys think?

    Shaun

Just got back from the film. It's a really enjoyable one, and probaly Spielberg's most ENTERTAINING film since either JURASSIC PARK or THE LAST CRUSADE. It's a fun 2:20 that never seems to lag (until the end, but hey - what can ya do?).

As for the score - it's a solid effort by Williams that definitely harens back to his late 70s/early 80s strengths (notably the action stuff), and aside from the inclusion of that motif that we also hear in AOTC (just before Anakin goes off to find his mom), I thought the score was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good.

I've gotta listen to the album a few more times before writing up my review, but that's just my quick summary for y'all.

I think it's a good score, and I hope to find it great in the next few listens.

Probably one step below Attack of the Clones.

1: This type of question could be taken as sexist discrimination against John Williams' girl fans. (If Zimmer has them, Willie has got to have some too.)

2: I'll wait to see the movie on video before deciding about this score.

Well it's John Williams so naturally the score is good.

I like it, by the way is it me or does track 8 contain a little hint of the Imperial March????? I'm not sure of the time within the cue but I will check tonite.

Wait, wait, wait. If a score is Hornered by John Williams, it's a good thing?

My emotional response to this music is still pretty thin. JW's action music has become a turn off (huge music isn't always inherently good). I do like the "love" theme or whatever it is. Not too obvious, but nicely worked in and about the score. And whomever said some of this score hints of a Bernard Herrmann score? Get off the crack pipe. Like Shaun says, Alan Silvestri was the temp track when the comparisons absolutely have to be made. Bah!

Hey, maybe they should start calling you "Dicko"!

I'm sure more people would be offended by you calling Williams "Willie", anyway.

I think there's a fundamental difference there.... Williams has been known as "Johnny Williams" professionally. He's never been called "Willie" - which is nothing more than a fan-boy induced nickname.

If you want to see the roots of Minority Report, I suggest you go all the way back to Johnny's Irwin Allen days--track 10 is like every great theme Williams wrote for Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants all rolled into one. A lot of the brooding music hearkens back to Lost in Space and Land of the Giants too. I love this score--I really don't understand people who yawn over a score like this on a movie music board. It's like, "it sounds too much like movie music!" That's what I LOVE, baby!

    My point exactly.

sons o' bitches, no one in Vegas has Minority Report. At least no one within 10 miles, and I ain't driving all over the valley looking for it.

so I bought two Gerhardt CDs instead (Classic Film Music for Bette Davis, and Gone With the Wind). Minority Report I can get when I get moved; it's not like it's going OOP anytime soon.

    Peter,

I'm not sure if Williams pulled a "Horner", as you put it. I've listened to it a good three times now, and there certainly aren't the same number of notes flying around from other Williams' scores opposed to, oh, Windtalkers.

Granted, much of the action music is near identicle to many of his recent efforts, but hey, it's only style -- and it still rocks.

Needless to say, no shop in Malta has Minority Report.

Or Classic film music for Bette Davis.
    Or Gone with the Wind.

(actually I think I saw a recording of Gone with the Wind once...)

    Bah! Humbug!

JJ, I don't know how you survive out there. I was in Vegas over the weekend. Apart from the 103 degree weather, the soundtrack selection SUCKS. That Tower Records off of Sahara has the most pathetic selection... Are there any good places to look for soundtracks there?

That's the one Gerhardt album I've never been too excited about. Have it though. I hope Minority Report comes out here next week (that's the date Amazon.at gives). Sum of All Fears won't be found in Vienna until autumn. Damn bastards.

I feel your pain, JJH. Stores in Maine are so damn slow at getting new soundtrack releases, too. I still haven't found a copy of Goldsmith Conducts Goldsmith.

Hey Mike. I was out in Las Vegas about a month ago (spent some time with JJ while I was out there, as well). If you're willing to pay the money, since it's surely not cheap, check out the Virgin Megastore inside the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace next time you go to Vegas. They have a very, very impressive soundtrack section. I picked up The Blue Planet and Canone Inverso while I was in that store.

I forgot about Virgin Megastore at the Forum Shops... They do have a nice selection. But the prices are ridiculous. I wonder if they are ANY good used shops in Vegas.

if you're into LPs, there is a WEALTH of soundtracks as yet unreleased on CD. Many, many Henry Mancini scores. Indeed, I have also found a copy of Disney's Robin Hood on LP....for $45. The guy that owns Record City knows what he's got, because every vinyl LP that is somewhat rare is $15 minimum.

I've spent a lot on LPs since being out here (found Fenton's wonderful Jewel in the Crown for a buck) just to familiarize myself with more music from composers, not necessarily because I like collecting those things -- though LP cover art will never be surpassed.

Used CD soundtrack selections suck ass here.

    It was 114 today.

I am moving to the Baltimore/ D.C. tomorrow (guess I need to get packing.....I'm already putting CDs in those damnable Case Logic cases
Wonder if the soundtrack selection there is any good.
