of the four scores represented here, the only one I am familiar with is Ernest Gold's On the Beach, a damned good score. Seems to me that it suffers a bit in the movie because of the edits. Still, good stuff that everyone should try.
Downer of a movie though.posted 06-18-2002 01:26 PM PT (US)

ON THE BEACH! Now I can retire my LP to CD-R transfer. This indeed good news for those who only know him through his score for Exodous (which is fine, but it's not his only work)or Mad, Mad, Mad World or Judgement at Nuremberg. This is probably my favorite of his and I'm looking forward to Secret of Santa Vittoria.
JJH, You are right about the movie being a downer. It's hard to pick the most depressing moment as there are so many.
The deserted city or maybe the sailor pointlessly fishing in San Francisco bay. Hard to say.

well, Lukas is going to smoke out the REAL fanatics with this months' releases."On The Beach" is a very intriguing exercise in adaptation, since it is based on "Waltzing Matilda," but I wonder how many, especially younger, fans will want to own it. "Santa Victoria" is a nice addition, but for me personally, it's nothing I've been dying to have.
The "Point Blank / Outfit" disc is pretty essoteric. Both scores are unusual, almost avant-garde with jazz blends, not unlike "The French Connection." I think I'd like to hear more of the scores before I purchase - although the clips are a great way to start. For my money (and that's what we're talking about here), I'm getting LOTS more mileage out of "The Traveling Executioner." But that's why they make chocolate and vanilla. And Goldsmith and Fielding.

LOL, Mark. "Chocolate and vanilla" comment would have been even funnier if it were "Quincy Jones" and "Johnny Williams." I'd say Fielding is more like Dulce de Leche. Oh yeah. Good news re: this month's issues.
