What a great composer! I am beginning to love his music. I ordered a couple of cds, and I must say, he writes beautiful music. It´s a shame he isn´t known so well as he should be.Your thougths?

I became a big Lee Holdridge fan after his 16 Days of Glory was used in the opening ceremonies of the Winter olympics. He has a great melodic gift. I recommend all of the Citadel recordings, and El Pueblo del Sol and Pastime on Bay Cities.

I just got INTO THIN AIR, BUFFALO GIRLS, GUNFIGHTER'S MOON, THE GIANT OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN, STAR COMMAND, FREEFALL, THE BEASTMASTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. I'm absolutely in love with Holdridge's music. Hearing more then just THE BEASTMASTER concert suite is very satisfying. INTO THIN AIR is also a rare treat because the music on the album was recorded directly to 2-channel digital with no multi track mix-down. It's like being at CTS Studios live during the recording session.Holdridge has a great gift of melody. Truly one of the most under-appreciated composers working today. He ranks right up there with Broughton and Folk. It's a damn shame!!!
My two cents,

A great and under rated composer. Check out his official website, if you haven't already.

Into the arms of strangers has a great main theme and The Mists of Avalon is just ****ing fantastic! His Beauty and the Beast stuff is good, though the Don Davis cues on the cd kick their arse.
I`m not too keen on his score for Texas (very small orchestra and quite tv-movie-ishMust try some more of his work....

I highly recommend all of his work... as you can tell from my previous post. Having completed a three hour tribute radio show in Mr. Holdridge's honor I really got a better appreciation of his work. For two weeks straight I listened to nothing but Holdridge. A truly exhilarating and motivating experience.Scores that were re-introduced to me during that time were...
- IN THE ARMS OF STRANGERS, which has a magnificent main theme.
- THE SECRET OF NIMH 2 which I dusted off and couldn't believe that I only listened to it once when I first received it. The finale is splendid.
- INTO THIN AIR is a score I would most likely have passed by in a music store because I've never heard of the film before. This is one of Holdridge's true masterpieces. Again, another great main theme, glorious finale and an incredible recording.
- WIZARD AND WARRIORS... I always forget that Holdridge composed music for this short-lived T.V. series. I suggest you go out and get Charles Gerhardt's recording of the concert suite, as it is an extended version of the CINCINNATI POPS suite. I don't think any of the original recordings have been released.
- THE MIST OF AVALON... this was one of my top ten scores of 2001 and still is one of the scores I visit on a consistent basis. The Excaliber cue is spine tingling.
Anyway, I'm listening to STAR COMMAND and FREEFALL at the moment. Quite interesting to hear some synth music composed by Holdridge. Very atmospheric.
My two cents,
-Erik

Holdridge composed music for the television mini-series in 1981. Rosenman composed music for the original film in 1955.

Lee Holdridge composed the score for the TV mini-series version of the novel.

I believe it was Holdridge who scored Baseball in Black and White? Anyways, it was a great score, too bad it was not released. I especially loved the end music with the vocals.

I have this last 24 hours been enormously impressed by Old Gringo, which I found second hand in the moviemusic.com store. A wonderful find at an excellent price. This Holdridge does have the gift of themes...

Like Erik, I have and like many of those. Also good are his classical works that were released on the old Varese LP and later some of it on CD. Very nice also.
I particularly like the Gerhardt LP and CD of his music that came out on Varese back in 1985 or 86. It has great stuff on it including Coming HOme and the Great Whales. Very nice stuff. Also other selections from Beastmaster and Wizards and Warriors on there too, both very good. I bought the LP from Peaches on West Florissant in St Louis back then, but did not find CD until recently in an auction for 3.00. What a find.

The movie TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 is a "good" example of how movie producers can trash an original music score. The victim in this case was Lee Holdridge. TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 is also a rare case where the soundtrack album does much more justice to the score than the movie for which it was composed for.The producers of TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 did incredible damage to the film in musical terms by replacing Mr. Holdridge’s powerful original “Main Title” music with a pop song that wasn’t even connected with the movie's theme song, “Transylvania 6-5000” (based on "Pennsylvania 6-5000" by Sigman & Gray). The musical wholeness of the final film is far from impressive - but no fault of Mr. Holdridge - and thus, the only way to experience the true splendour of this score is to listen to it on its own, in the complete original form composed by Lee Holdridge, away from the lousy film (which was written and directed by the Mel Brooks alumnus Rudy DeLuca).
The hilarious “Transylvania 6-5000” theme song itself appears in an important role of the phone ringing sound later in the film. It should have been appropriate to give a hint to this theme in the beginning of the film - as Mr. Holdridge did with his wonderful “Happy Arrival” variation of the theme.
Holdridge's TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 had a big part in igniting my love for symphonic movie music in the middle of 80's.

I have to second John Winfrey on Holdridge classical works. Varese issued a really great LP of his violin concerto and a suite from his opera. Their Holdridge conducts Holdrige LP with Scenes of Summer and other odds and ends was equally good.

Into Thin Air remains one of my favorite scores...music doesn't get much more manly than that!

Holdridge is a great composer. He writes music that would be at home in a big blockbuster, but he doesn't usually get much feature work these days. It's a shame that somebody with so much to offer is being sidelined by the pervasive influence of the elephantine Media Ventures sound.I have an audio standards LP that has some of Holdridge's music on it in order to demonstrate properly balanced sound... the recording was made at an engineers convention. In general I have found that in addition to his talent as a composer, he is also a great record producer. Even The Beastmaster has a terrifically "raw" sound to it.
