my vote for the greatest ever is WALK ON THE WILD SIDE. Elmer Bernstein's music plays while a black cat walks; it was designed by Saul Bass.

I actually really like the ORIGINAL Planet Of The Apes opening. When looking at the titles without any music, who could have possibly anticipated that kind of score?Brilliant!

Like Dan, I have millions of main titles in my head, but I really did love the opening of O Brother, Where Art Thou? and its use of music.

Well...almost anything by Maurice Binder who did the Bond titles. Also love his non-Bond stuff like "Charade," "Arabesque," "The Tamarind Seed," and "The Awakening."
Of course Saul Bass is great too. His Hitchcock stuff like "Vertigo," "North by Northwest," and "Psycho" are classics. As is the aforementioned "Spartacus" title he did for Kubrick.
Recently I saw a Spanish film called "Second Skin" which had one of the most beautiful main title sequences with additionally beautiful music by Roque Banos.
We must remember that it is that melding of visuals AND music that is so wonderful...and rarely done anymore.

There was atopic like this at another forum a few years back and there were some great titles mentioned. I have my own extensive list but don't have time to put it down now. But one recent example of a very nice conceptual title design married to the most appropriate music was Hollow Man. Those swirling, microscopic letters forming the credits to Jerry Goldsmith's sinewy music was better than most of the movie itself.

It's pretty hard to knock any of the Saul Bass or Maurice Binder titles. [A current car commercial is using the same multiple split-screen effect that Bass designed for the Grand Prix main title.] I like the Goldfinger titles as well which were done by John Hollingsworth (I believe). There have been too many good ones recently to keep track of the films and the title designers. The titles to Spike Lee's Jungle Fever were amazing though, about 4 billion X better than the film that followed them. Back in the 80s, I remember loving the Last Embrace titles. Sisters has some intense titles. Bloodline. The Re-Animator.
Thinking back there have been some great TV show title sequences, these tend to be much better than most done for films.
This is an interesting topic, wish I could come up with more just off the top of my head like this, but I'm drawing a blank.

"What's the Superman Main Titles like?
- - Zooming text flys over and around the screen to John Williams blasting fanfare. It's stunning. Woo hoo!!"Camillu & John Zimmer,
ACTUALLY THAT'S NOT ALL

When speaking of "Main Titles" I'm always impressed by the most carefully planned wholenesses - and SUPERMAN is indeed THE most favorite of mine. The sad part is that if one has seen only a blurred copy of this movie in small tv screen, one really can't see the point of SUPERMAN's opening - because it really HAS TO BE EXPERIENCED ON BIG SCREEN !!!SUPERMAN starts with photographed curtains rolling away (like MOULIN ROUGE) to reveal the small, old-standard movie screen - I mean REALLY SMALL compared to Widescreen. There is the black 'n' white image of a Superman magazine (or was it "Action Comics"?) and a little girl's voice doing the prologue narration - with the stunning impressionistic musical background by John Williams. Then the drawn black 'n' white Daily Planet logo transforms into a "live one" and the camera zooms into the night sky - but still the screen keeps its small format. So, when finally the Superman logo bursts into the full Panavision widescreen, the result is simply cinema history - thousand times better and more thrilling than STAR WARS ever.
John Williams' music for this entire sequence is pure magic - every little snippet and nuance of it.

Ken, that's no little girl's voice! That's a little boy's voice.... ya think little girls were avid comic book readers back in the 70s??

Hmmm. Must rent Superman.....Another one I remembered - Godzilla. The Main Titles and Jean Reno's Elvis impression were the only good things about the movie, IMO.

Great choice Dan.Some favorites of mine:
Vertigo
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Mysterious Island
North by Northwest
Oscar
Re-Animator
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (this is colorful credits with the black background and Elfman's score..pretty simple, but it sets the tone for the film very well)
Howard the Duck
It's Alive
Edward Scissorhands
Spellbound
..and there are many more I have not thought of.

Mars Attacks (possibly my second favorite thing about the film {the first favorite being Elfman's score} is the main title sequence)
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Beetlejuice
...possibly more to come
