As the biggest sporting event in the world kicks off today, I was remembering something about the last final in France in '98.As you may or may not know, when France lifted the gold trophy at the end of the final, the Star Wars Main Title (I believe it was the version that blends into the end credits) blared out across the 80,000 fans in the stadium, and the billions at home. I remember having a huge grin on my face at the time, and afterwards wondering why exactly they had chosen to play that.
But I realised it was a great choice of music, for the following reasons:
- It was a refreshing change from the overplayed (but still superb) 'We Are The Champions'.
- It's a triumphant piece of music.
- It's instantly recognisable.
- It starts with a bang, rather than picking up slowly.
- It's loud, but melodic.
- It remains loud and triumphant right up till the end.
Can you think of any other pieces of music that would fit the above bill? I wonder what they'll play in a month's time? I guess 'O Foturna' springs to mind, but it has that quiet passage after the initial burst.

"O fortuna" might be somewhat too dark I think. A piece that would work brilliantly could be "Gonna fly now" from Rocky. Without the percussion, synth and el. guitar but with a big orchestra and choir. Imagine that. I think it could just as good as Star Wars. Another great piece that could work would of course be the Superman march.

I have a big exam tomorrow, but it was worth taking 2 hours off from the books to watch Italy in action
(and of course, another 15 mins off to come check the boards...)

What music have you heard being played during the World cup?So far I've only noticed Elmer Bernstein's 'Man With The Golden Arm' played during a montage of footage.
Ireland V Germany about to start...ohh crumbs!

Shock win by the yanks stuffing Portugal 3 - 2

I like tuning in to the national anthems. So far my favourite has got to be the German national anthem. What a superb piece of music.
Any other favourites?
Also, the Vangelis 'anthem' played to the tune of World Cup images before the matches is great. It's growing on me.
p.s. Good luck for the next 2 days if any of you side with France or England.
And great win for you Americans!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard the crowd singing a song to the theme of "The Great Escape" during the England vs Sweden match.

Yes, yes I know it's Haydn. It used to be the Austrian Anthem once upon a time...
Was it used in some film/commercial/thingy, cos it sounds really familiar, and it's not like I listen to the German anthem every day...
Thanks.

Ireland's last minute goal against Germany was incredible! Can England beat Argentina?...I think so, we'll see

The English national anthem sucks big time and always has (not even written by an Englishman)...should be Parry's 'Jerusalem', one of the greatest tunes ever written. Just for the record, Elgar never wanted Land Of Hope And Glory to be used as the national anthem...shame really!

The American soccer team won a game, yawn.here in the south the we allow children to play soccer to gain foot coordination so they can eventually play real football, basketball, or baseball.
But as any true southerner knows there is only one sport and that is college football, which starts in 3 months.
Joe, who hopes whoever your rooting for wins.

Cool Joe, one day America will catch up and realise which is the Worlds true game and stop being so insular
Enland's last world cup game against Argentina (1998) was today shown in collage form set to the music of Morricone's instrumental version of 'The Big Gundown'!

Not likely Timmer, since most Americans like more scoring. Sure there is nonstop action, but we tend to like set plays and defense, something you don't see in world football. Granted Baseball has no more scoring than soccer but it has much more strategy and is a statistitions dream. Baseball has captivated American starting on its 3rd century now.I must say I am intrigued by the ferocity that the rest of the world has for the game of soccer. It has more appeal to me than the game itself.

While at Borders today, I noticed a Philip's CD titled "World Soccer Anthems." Anyone have it? I didn't get it, but will certainly keep it mind.Twenty-three tracks were devoted to countries (so not everyone was represented) and five additional tracks, one of which was none other than THE GREAT ESCAPE! I don't recall seeing a performance credit, but Seiji Ozawa's name was somewhere on the back cover.
Anyway, it's been a terrific week of action. Looking forward to more of it.

Without a doubt, William's Superman March is the most majestic, triumphant, epic song I've ever heard, and in that context would be perfect for any would-be spectacle. However, its so strongly associated with and unseverable from Superman the character it just would not work.

The sweltering heat didn't stop the English supporters from performing a very lengthy rendition of 'The Great Escape' this morning. 3 games, 3 performances so far
I only watched the first half, then switched channels to savour the Argentine desperation.
Here's hoping Italy don't make it 3 upsets in 3 days tomorrow. Forza Azzurri!

I now love South Korea!!! After a piss poor performance and a 3-1 loss to Poland, South Korea has given the US a great gift by beating Portugal 1-0. Not only that, but the US also avoids playing Italy and gets a chance to face an old rival in Mexico! Hopefully, that match will be a lot better than this Poland match was. Get ready Hector!! US vs. Mexico on Monday!!

I was counting on USA to beat the poles, cos I'd much prefer USA as Italy's opponents in the 2nd round. Now we have to battle against one of the revelations of the tournament, and 50,000 screaming fans. It's gonna be tough.
If there are any Italian supporters out there, who had tachycardia just like me yesterday, you might want to paste this as your wallpaper. I made it yesterday (simple, I know....)

Indeed. USA continues to amaze me. Sure, they have one of the world's best WOMEN soccer teams, but the male team has always left a lot to be desired. NOW THEY'RE IN THE FLIPPIN' QUARTER FINAL!! That's amazing, along with the fact that we're going to have one of the underdogs Senegal, Turkey or Japan as long as the SEMI-FINAL.[Message edited by Thor on 06-17-2002]

Thanks, Hector!! I can't believe it!!! It was a very good match this morning. I think Mexico caught a couple bad breaks especially with the missed hand ball in the penalty box. But, the USA goalie played another great match and made some unbelievable saves to keep the USA alive again. Let's hope he can do it again against Germany!!

The South Korea win was a disgrace. If they don't introduce TV-assisted refereeing after this World Cup, they never will.
