So, on the new DVD, does Poledouris talk over all the unreleased bits?

As far as I can tell, he doesn't talk over the music. In fact, he ends his commentary right before the last act of the movie. A very insightful commentary from Basil and the sound mix is awesome!

    I can confirm that
1 he doesn't talk over the music.
2 Soundmix is Dolby Digital 5.0
3 Commentary is only mixed in the center channel
4 He stops at about Dizzy's Funeral
5 His commentary is one of the most insightful I have listened to.
6 just a little tidbit about how his daughter got into the movie.

It pisses me off that I'm going to have to buy this again, but hey---at least the commentary is by a real composer (and not one by Isham or Rabin).

Well, the iso score/Basil's commentary is worth it... and the other new extras are pretty good too....

It really is a great commentary. And a very nice transfer of the film too. It's definately worth getting rid of the other version and getting this one.

    Shaun,

What an absolutely idiotic comment. I'm curious as to why you don't regard Isham as a 'real' composer.

I got my copy for free. I had a bunch of laser discs I traded in, so I got it with some of my credit. And I picked up Harry Potter for $9.95. Comp USA had it on sale as a Memorial Day special. Can't beat that.

    Isham blows. Simple as that.

    Drone isn't a composition.

Actually, his "Life as a House" is very good.

    Crono,
Are you serious? You must love George Winston if you like this sappy crap.

Isham`s only good score is Fly Away Home, simple as that it is.

I disagree. While I'm really not crazy about Mark Isham's output in recent years, with the exception of Life As A House, Fly Away Home and The Public Eye, I really enjoy his late 80's scores like The Hitcher and The Beast. His music from the late 80's is not far removed from the kind of music Cliff Martinez wrote for Traffic. I also like his scores for Point Break and The Getaway, which are an interesting blend between the music he was writing in the late 80's and the style he was moving towards in the 90's.

Hey! Mark Isham, while not neccesarily the most skilled orchestral composer, is great when it comes to the realm of jazz. Check out Romeo is Bleeding for something that works wonderful as a score but also as music.
