I have been told that I need to pay attention to some old Jerry Goldsmith scores as well as the new ones. I know that I am not the only Goldsmith fan around here, so what would you people recommend? Something along the lines of action/suspense/thriller/"what the ****'s going on?" kind of music.

Actually, maybe you guys could give me tips on old scores in general. I would love to expand my collection and be able to explore a different era of film scoring. You can give me any recommendations, but I would really appreciate some good horror/suspense/thriller recommendations. You know, sort of like how Earle Hagen's scores for THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW were.

    Thanks!

    • The Omen Trilogy
    • Alien
    • Planet of the Apes
    • The Blue Max
    • The Great Train Robbery
    • Poltergeist
    • Night Crossing
    • Star Trek TMP
    • ...

    Other old scores::

    • Captain Blood!! (Korngold)
    • The Sea Hawk (Korngold)
    • The Adventures of Robin Hood (Korngold)
    • Herrmann scores
    • Ben-Hur (Rozsa)
    • All the Gerhardt compilations

Those are but the most important ones.

"Old" Goldsmith I couldn't be without:

  • Masada (Varese, OOP)
  • Night Crossing (Intrada)
  • Wind and the Lion (Intrada)
  • His 100 thousand western scores (100 Rifles (FSM) being my favorite)
  • In Like Flint/Our Man Flint (Varese)
  • The Blue Max (Legacy)
  • Patton/Tora! Tora! Tora! (Varese re-recording)

As for other "old" scores, these are some I enjoy:

  • Prince Valiant (Franz Waxman, FSM)
  • El Cid (Miklos Rozsa)

Anything by Korngold (Marian has that covered ) Be sure to check out the series conducted by Gerhardt on the RCA label. I highly recommend the Herrmann , Waxman, and Korngold discs. This Herrmann re-recording is also quite enjoyable.

You may have to do some searching for these because some are boot CDs and others older LPs, but great early Goldsmith means:

The Twilight Zone (TV) especially 'The Invaders'
    Freud
    The Prize
    The List of Adrian Messenger
    The Spiral Road
    The Satan Bug
    A Patch of Blue
    THE BLUE MAX
    In Harm's Way
    Rio Conchos
    Our Man Flint
    In Like Flint
    The Loner (TV)
    The Trouble With Angels
    Sebastian
    PLANET OF THE APES
    Hour of the Gun
    The Chairman
    Patton
    Papillon
    Chinatown
    The Mephisto Waltz
    THE WIND AND THE LION
    Logan's Run
    Ransom
    Islands in the Stream

...and that's just a start, I'm skipping items that people would swear by. But any five of the above would be a good eatin'

Guess some of us are a little slow arriving. David, I have some sense for your kind of music. If you could hear Rasuli Attacks from The Wind and the Lion, you'd be sold on that great score. Wonderful action filled score. Should have won the Oscar. It's a good movie too.

I'm very partial to Goldsmith's westerns and really like Take a Hard Ride and Rio Conchos.

    Hey David,

    Just adding my two cents...

If you're interested in older scores, a good way to see what you would like is buying some compilations....I know you like to sample 30 second clips at Amazon, but most of those clips don't give the cues justice at all...

I know you don't like a lot of the 30 second clips of scores you sample (Vertigo was one you didn't like too much I think), but it's happened to me many times that something I sampled wasn't anything compared to what it ended up being when I listened to it in it's entirety.

You might want to try some Herrmann or "classic film music" compilations...some of these pieces are essential for nearly every score collection, but you also might discover something you'll love.

    I don't know, that's why I was asking you.

Does anybody else remember a lot of Dick Van Dyke shows being scored as horror/suspense/thrillers?

I dunno. I was just trying to give the best example possible. I guess those scores were not as well known as I had specualted.

    "Uhny Uftz"
"It May Look Like A Walnut"
    "The Ghost Of A. Chantz"
