Just got back from a sneak preview of DreamWorks’s “Spirit,” and wow. The film, set in the old west is about a horse that experiences life on the frontier and the emergence of man into the untamed west. The film is a feast for the eyes, not only color wise, but frame wise also. The film (presented in scope to my great surprise) looks stunning, and if it looked this good on film, the DVD will be breathtaking. From a color standpoint, it was a wonder to behold; DreamWorks animation has out done themselves and given the view a very rich color palette for the eyes to feast upon during the 80 minute presentation. This film is a must see.A daring thing that DreamWorks did was that there is very little dialogue in the film, and no, the horses don't talk! Although there is some voice over provided by Matt Damon. Driven by the three key elements of visual storytelling, Bryan Adam’s songs and Zimmer and Jablonsky’s score, the film works very well with the minimal dialogue, it forces the view to feel around the scene rather then have it explained for them.
The songs for the film are very good (Adam’s is so back). DreamWorks used the Disney/Tarzan/conscience perspective for the songs and they worked extremely well in the film and I’m sure will transfer very well to CD. Reflecting the actions in the film, the songs move the film along as would dialogue, but due to the nature of the film, songs work better then a dialogue. And what little dialogue there is (including voiceover) makes the songs that much more enjoyable.
The score, oh my god the score. Both Zimmer and Jablonsky have out done themselves this time. The score itself is like that of "Days of Thunder" and "Beyond Rangoon." Working with powerful themes set against the films story line, the score lifts the amazing visuals and story to new heights. Using the main theme for the backdrop of many of the cues, the music itself was for the most part wall to wall in the film. There was some music that was indeed filler music, but for the most part the CD was very enjoyable and I am very much looking forward to the CD release on May 14th.
My friend and I were the oldest people there that didn’t have a parent with us, while somewhat out of place, my friend and I enjoyed the film very much hats off to DreamWorks for this film. I think it is a noble approach to the medium of animation and visual storytelling, I hope to see more films like this in the future.
If you’re an animation buff, you have to see this movie; then again, I believe everyone should see this movie. It is a very uplifting and enjoyable experience for all ages.
Rating: ***1/2 (out of 4)

Hi, all I'm back! I was about to post a question on this score after I saw it in the Sunday ads to be released Tuesday. I am planning on buying it. And of course I am going to see the film, I love horses in case you haven't guessed that yet. Thanks Crono for the review!

I think the lack of interest in Crono's post reflects the general lack of interest in this film.I was pumped for Prince of Egypt, but I merely shrug at this.
Maybe it's simply because nobody wants to see a story about a horse (opposed to a lion), or maybe it's because Dreamworks' marketing has been downright poor.
Regardless, I'll probably wait 'till I see what the general reaction is, then decide to see it in theatres or wait for video (yes, I let other people's opinions effect what I see and what I don't see).

"I think the lack of interest in Crono's post reflects the general lack of interest in this film."WRONG, Hasta!
At least in my case...Spirit looks very good to me.
I was sold on it the day I watched that wonderful preview on the Shrek home vid.
I am very interested in seeing this film!posted 05-12-2002 09:26 PM PT (US)

Well Chris (funny how whenever I try to type Chris, I end up typing Christ -- I ain't even religous
), my man, it's not that I have ZERO interest in the film, I just seem to be remaining more pessimistic towards it.Maybe it's because it looks like the same old (needless to say, tired) Disney formula of the past few decades, or maybe it's because that pop song in the trailer really put a gap in my heart (I never had the oppurtunity to see the one with Goldsmith's Rudy in it). I do agree the animation looks FABULOUS, but the story, from what they've shown via the trailer, doesn't even look remotely interesting.
I'm glad Brian liked it, but he also liked Dinosaur and Atlantis, so maybe he's easier on run-of-the-mill-animated-films-that-offer-virtually-nothing-new than I am.

I was also looking forward to Zimmer's score, and while it's certainly pleasant to listen to, none of the pieces on the album (that is listenable online; don't remember the url) come close to The Lion King or Prince of Egypt..
WHO KNOWS. Let's just wait and see, I suppose.

Where do you live so I can come and smack you? I like animated films, you apparently don't, so you attack me by saying I liked "Atlantis" or "Dinosaur."See, you don't appreciate the medium. Animation can give an audience true visual storytelling on a level that live action will never get to. Sometimes a cell of anamation can display an emotion 100 times more then a frame of film.
Call me what you will, the film was great and the music was great.

Heh, well, you are the typical person that looks at for thing like that are put together, and you never give them a chance do you? I know you're not going to pay money to see the film. You need to learn to look past all that, you said the animation looked great, then see it on that hunch.

Dude, talk about taking something personal that wasn't intended to be at all...
I still stand by what I said; I find both Atlantis and Dinosaur to be unbearably mediocre films, and you liked them -- all I suggested is that you're easier on the medium than others (which I find to be true).
Regardless, I didn't attack you in any way, shape, or form.

Hasta--is there a time you don't approach a film with a pessimistic attitude?

Quill, usually only when it's in the hands of somebody like Scorsese, Cameron, or Spielberg.

Ehm,perhaps you're simply harder on the medium than others.
I loved Dinosaur and so did my nephew, who loves the music as well, and I was impressed with Atlantis although not overwhelmingly crazy about the score.

My wife picked this one up yesterday--the little bit I've heard sounds pretty good. Even Bryan Adams doesn't sound half bad.
