There have only been a handful of albums released in these new formats, and only a few of those that have been in or related to the film score genre (song albums such as Footloose, Top Gun and The Sopranos don't count). As near as I can tell, these are the only ones...

John Barry: Dances With Wolves SACD
Jerry Goldsmith: The Film Music SACD Hybrid*
Jerry Goldsmith: Christus Apollo SACD Hybrid*
Bernard Herrmann: The Film Scores (Esa-Pekka Salonen/LA Philharmonic) SACD
James Horner: Titanic DTS and SACD

Pretty short list, huh? Of course, other albums of interest to me have been produced in these formats, including Santana's Abraxus. The Allman Brothers At Fillmore East in DTS, numerous classical albums on SACD and quite a few Miles Davis classics, so I have plenty to listen to in the format. I would just like to have more film music, especially considering how excellent the multi-channel mix of The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith sounds (check out the percussion on The Wind and the Lion for a real thrill).

Does anybody out there know about any other film score or film-score related music that are in these formats? Every store I go to seems to have a completely different selection, and many of the people behind the counter give me dead expressions when I ask about them...

Oh, and I know that A.I. is out on DVD-Audio, but I'm just wondering about SACD and DTS for right now.

    * SACD Hybrids are dual-layer discs that are playable on all CD players (with all the bells and whistles, including CD Text), but have both stereo and multichannel Super Audio material on another layer.

What about DVD isolated scores? Are any of those true multichannel, or are film scores all mixed down to 2-channel before insertion into the movie soundtrack?

The Mummy is in true multi-channel Dolby Digital sound.

Yes, The Mummy, L.A. Confidential and The Witches of Eastwick are all isolated in 5.1 sound, but they are Dolby Digital tracks.

SACD and DTS discs offer much better quality than a standard CD.

On my page http://www.student.io.tudelft.nl/io050025/soundtrax/score_list.htm you will find a listing of some of the DVD's I own with the soundmix and region specifically mentioned.

I am continuing that notation, because I myself find the soundmix important, as it adds to the value of the disc.

I think it's time for RCA to enter the multichannel market with fresh new releases of the Gerhardt series.

    BMG? In the multichannel market?
Shrill distortions in surround sound... :\

If they have to remix/remaster/rewhatever the old albums, they should let someone else do it.

All the BMG-remastered RCA classical titles I have sound shrill and distorted.

The 3 RCA Dolby Surround titles I have sound pretty good, however. But those are more like exceptions than the rule.

I don't know who did the remastering on the Gerhardt discs, but the Citizen Kane compilation sounds awesome. (Except my 2 CDR copies, which are both defective; I'm still looking for the CD in stores).

While we're talking about sound formats, the HDCD website has a catalogue that's browseable by musical styles - but the section "Movie soundtracks" contains ONE CD?? Hello?? What happened to the others?
