Yeah, I'm just bummed that one Gaelic-Irish thingie (the one w/the thrumming sound and the lyrics) isn't gonna be on this because it's on the crappy collection of songs - about, uh, one of which was in the final finished film. Yes, they played it about five times in the film and yes it seems so, like, BRAVEHEARTy but it was one of the few bright spots in this movie. DAMN!

On the plus side, I did think that the score was a nice collection of everything I'd heard Nick Glennie do before and I'm anxious to own it because it has some beautiful passages - including the one where they're off at dawn (however inspired by THIN RED LINE it obviously was, prompting my non-score-attuned friend to go "isn't this the music from TRL?").

Like a goober I've been searching the racks for this since it was announced it'd be out, like, a month ago. So I'm glad it'll be avail. finally.

Actually it appears that the Irish-Gaelic thingy referred to earlier will indeed appear on the score album -- I think it's called "Sgt. Mackenzie" and it looks like it appears in 3 tracks. Should be a nice lengthy album. I like the sound clips.

Dude! It is 'Sgt. MacKenzie' and you made my day w/this news...thank god i held off buying the songs album...i can't really think of but maybe one/two times a cut off the songs-only ends up on the Soundtracks (for example: one of the best cuts in ALI is the only score cut on the first soundtrack, but nowhere on the 2nd, tho that's different I suppose since the 2nd soundtrack is like 1/4 songs and 3/4 score-ambient...but anyhoo). Props to whomever helped make sure it's on there. Probably b/c it's part of the score, as your post suggests, but I'm stoked nonetheless. Thanks for the update/post.

Picked this score up yesterday. Impressive stuff. I wasn't a big fan of Nick Glennie-Smith, particularly after Man In The Iron Mask, but We Were Soldiers is much, much better. A lot more grown up, rather than recycled Zimmer -- it's very similar to The Thin Red Line. Recommended.

But Steve, isn't that a little contradictory? Being very similar to Thin Red Line sounds like "recycled Zimmer" to me... or maybe I'm just reading you wrong.

Recycled Zimmer is not necessarily bad.

Thin Red Line always sounded too pompous in its purpose. Always sounded overdone in its pseudo-psychological trek to explore emotions.

If Glennie-Smith recycles it by bringing it down to a more natural level, it will be a better score.

(For one thing, I prefer G-S' Attila to Zimmer's Gladiator)

THe Attila score is servicable and all, but I felt rip off at point. Oh well.

I don't like NGS's music much at all.

I loved We Were Soldiers the movie, but the score essentially tried too hard.

    Jeron,

I meant the score doesn't sound like Zimmer's usual style, more in the style of Thin Red Line, which I think was Zimmer's most original effort for ages. So, yes, it is recycled, I s'pose. I'll shut up.

Maybe. But Attila is less pompous. And reminds me much less of Holst and Walton. So it wins on those fronts.
