    The movie is WHACK Yo!

The score is......uh...Well its nowhere near Cutthroat Island; quality wise. It IS fun, but I'm still disappointed.
Its is a cross between Silvestri's Mummy Returns and Kull the Conquer. Yes, there are rock drums and guitars when ever The Rock does something heroic; like standing up in slow motion. Hey anyone smell something cheesy???

I think they tried too hard to advertise and glorify the The Rock in this movie, so much so that it just made everything relating to him look cheesy, and Debney's music only made it worse with it orchestral-ROCK score. I mean really, Goldsmith's Kull score was obviously trying to satisfy to the Teen audience, but didn't enchance the picuture and only made the movie feel silly, because of the era they put rock music inm it was just out of place. I don't think that movie was a success, so what made them think it would work in The Scorpion King? Did they really think the rock music would enhance a story that happened about 4,000 years ago in North Africa?

I just think they should have approached this movie, without any references to the fact that it has "The Rock" (as we know him). A Wrestler who has lots of fans who wanna seem him do his famous eye-brow look.
So much focus was on him flexing his muscels, that whole story was lost and was only a secondary aspect to the film. Which by the way is only an hour and a half long including the end credits. To me thats kinda short for an epic movie.
Also the special effects are not as good as The Mummy's nor The Mummy Returns, the effects like a swarm of fire ants were like TV quality as well as a raging sand storm that runs over a hill. All were laughable.

You mean there's actually a story in this movie? WOW!

Rock scores can enhance this type of movie. Depends on the audience.
I'm pretty sure lots of "normal non-film-score-crazy" people will find a rock score more enjoyable than that "boring orchestral noise" playing in most movies.

Well the movie sounds awful. The score even though it may not be "CutThroat Island in quality" still looks good and I want a score release.

Well, there is a sort of cheesy appropriateness that a "rock score" might work for a film starring "The Rock."

Well, there isn't THAT much rock music in the score - the bulk of the electric guitar only shows up for a bit in the first half.

Regardless, this is an album I'm looking forward to - as long as they have that long climax cue at the end!

I don't know what people expect from a movie starring the Rock--Lawrence of Arabia? I have a feeling the movie is perfectly attuned to its intended demographic--the sequences (and music) I got to see were fun. This is not an "epic" movie, just a tongue-in-cheek action movie that's less overblown than the Mummy movies.

That "intended demographic" should be put in a time capsule until 2015; so skipping that "ain't it cool" nuisance faze, and, thus, forcing Hollywood to produce real movies once again.

I just saw a clip of it on Conan.

The Rock does the eyebrow raise in the movie.

    I'm thoroughly disgusted.

This movie was summed up for me by The Rock's first line of the script: "Boo"

That's absolutely right, Rock - BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Now you and that horrible CGI of you in MUMMY RETURNS are neck in neck for best "most horrible presence onscreen"

Can You Smell What the Rock's Stinkin' Up????

This weeks edition of Intrada sez:

    JOHN DEBNEY
The Scorpion King Varese 66368 $16.99
(39:57) Spin-off of THE MUMMY RETURNS allows The Rock his own feature, John Debney an opportunity to follow Goldsmith, Silvestri precedents. Themes take back seat to solid, pumped-up action music. Light on melody but heavy on energy. Superb recording a plus. Pete Anthony, John Debney conduct Hollywood Studio Symphony, Hollywood Film Chorale.

    Too da loo....
    Sean

I think Intrada's discription is pretty accurate. No strong themes, but supercharged action is what will sell. I like it.
And the recording is hot. Ouch!

Only thing I didn't like was the choir, and the rock'n'roll.
The choir just isn't big enough, and while I do like rock music, Debney's rock music just isn't good. Oh there is very little rock music on this CD.

Well then they weren't mixed right. Becuase they have hardly any presence. The recording of orchestra is really good though.

I have low standards for movies. When I see a movie and notice some very corny elements, I try to get past them. In short, I liked the movie, but would not had it not been for that reason.

    However, from a critical P.O.V....

    1) The Rock is good as the S.K. However, he needs to develop a bit of an accent if he is going to play a multi-thousand-year-old Egyptian character

    2) They should have held out on the heavy metal score. I am willing to bet it was not up to Debney to use them. It was probably decided by....well....somebody else, as another attempt to sell The Rock.

    3) Stephen Sommers should have directed this one. Yes, THE MUMMY and THE MUMMY RETURNS may have its faults, but hey....did Sommers use any heavy metal, over used Rock scenes, for TMR?

As for the score, I am definitely going to buy it. It is not entirely bad, it is a Varese CD, and I want to finish off my MUMMY music collection.
